POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Buster Posey had already won three World Series titles and made multiple All-Star teams when he asked a question most people would expect from a rookie.

On The Greatness Machine, Derin McMains, leading Mental Performance Coach, recalls sitting with Posey in the weight room when Posey asked whether he should hold his breath at the point of contact, or exhale, to generate more power at the plate.

McMains's takeaway was simple: great competitors are always studying other great competitors. The habit of questioning fundamentals never disappears with success. If anything, it sharpens.

It is a reminder that mastery is not a finish line. The people who reach the top of their field tend to be the ones who keep asking the smallest, most detailed questions long after they have stopped needing to prove anything.

What is one fundamental in your own work that is worth revisiting, even after years of experience?
