Track Spotlight: What We Do – Freeway ft Jay-z and Beanie Sigel

Written by: Daniel Ashitey

Very old, but still one of my favourite hip hop songs. It demonstrates Just Blaze’s production ability which we all know about and Jay-Z’s ability to show up on a track with real lyricists.
The track is a great combination of three rap styles that creates a timeless hip hop banger that is so easy to listen to. Freeway opens up with that traditional Philadelphia hunger and I think he has the best verse of the lot. He combines complex, rapidly changing rhyming schemes with pure conviction and clarity in his speech, whilst touching on themes like trying to put food on his family’s plate. Jay-Z then comes in with his usual laid-back style. He rides the beat so effortlessly, and his cadence on this track is so catchy. Beanie Sigel then closes the song off with a relentless, hood cadence and constant rhymes on the beat that leave you bopping uncontrollably. I like this song mostly because of the production though. The beat to me is the essence of old hip hop. Just Blaze took a small loop of an old soul song and layered drums on to it in such a simple but effective manner that drew the best out of the three rappers on this song.
