What happens to a jiu jitsu gym when you remove the head instructor entirely?

In this episode of The Grappling Monthly Podcast, we sit down with Alex and Howard, co-founders of The Coop in Culver City, CA, a grappling gym built after their original academy closed during the pandemic. They wanted a room that kept only the parts of jiu jitsu they liked and dropped the rest: no bowing, no set warm ups, no belt hierarchy dictating who learns from whom, and no single professor whose game everyone copies.

We cover how promotions actually work when there is no head coach, a peer system requiring seven black belt yes votes and zero objections. We get into their inverted pyramid of black belts, why higher level players at the gym will tell you how to beat their own game, and how a gym that started as a pure open mat had to add just enough structure to get people to show up. Alex and Howard also talk about keeping the gym apolitical through the vaccine era, running it on an honor system with no front desk, and why they think a room designed with as few rules as possible weeds out the wrong people on its own.

The Coop isn’t your ordinary martial arts academy. It is an open mat gym and BJJ space for workshops, seminars, BJJ events, and social events for its members. Their motto? Train how you like.

The Coop isn’t your typical jiu-jitsu gym. What happens when you strip away archetypal power structures and replace them with an informal space that runs on the collective obsession with grappling?

It’s never a dull moment at The Coop. A different kind of jiu-jitsu gym-built by its members, not built around a single voice. We train 365 days a year with no exceptions. There’s always a friendly face and a fun crowd. See you on the mats!

Special thanks to our friend @kylefloydfilms for creating this amazing video. We hope to continuously grow the community together.

I think this was my first submission in competition as a black belt w/ @laercio_trovao coaching me :]

I had a rough time at the start of competing at black belt, so this was a nice breakthrough to get. I remind black belts after they win their first match “hey, remember, you know you’re good enough to be on that stage with them” as it’s not uncommon for people to have a rocky start when first promoted

A big thank you to the Mexico City Consulate for hosting some of AILA SoCal’s members on an insightful and educational tour of the consulate! We’re grateful for the opportunity to learn more about the consulate’s processes and to strengthen collaboration to better serve our clients.

Surprised you missed the announcement? Don’t be—this was just something a few members decided to do on their own! But let us know—would you be interested in participating in a consulate tour in the future? We might organize something similar down the line!
