What will the music business look like in 2033? To find out where we're headed, @midia.research's Leon Farrell starts by looking at the industry in 2016.

This week on the podcast, we're sharing the keynote from last month's pre-conference titled "Future Echoes: The Music Business of Tomorrow Being Built Today."

He breaks down the bets that never took off, what actually reshaped the business, and MIDiA's forecasts on ARPU, the fan economy, and expanded rights.

The Music Tectonics Conference is next week, October 27-29 in Santa Monica (Hint: there may be a discount code in this episode)

AI is only as useful as the systems behind it.

Matt Urmy of @artistgrowth explains why music companies need to look beyond the AI tools themselves and ask what their software was built for. If your data models aren't structured around the realities of the music business, AI can struggle to get things right.

Before investing in more AI tools, make sure the foundation is there.

You can't replace that connection

@dearcalliope of @kit.better explains why physical music never really went away. Buying something from your favorite store, grabbing a souvenir at a show. It's a connection that streaming still can't replicate.

Tarun Nayar, who performs as @modernbiology101 , didn't expect this. He built the Pocket Scion to help fans recreate his plant-based music at home. What he didn't see coming was how much it would mean to actually put his name on an instrument.

We asked fans if they bought a CD this past year. Their answer surprised us

Jaime Marconette of @luminate_data has the data to prove it: Gen Z and millennials are buying CDs again, but only about half of them have a CD player. It's more about owning something they can hold display, and show off as a fan.
