So I’ve been trying my hand in a bit of poetry, a bit of spoken word recently

I find in my songwriting I put a lot of care and value into the words themselves and don’t write in a sort of verse chorus verse chorus style, but more like a vignette… maybe…

I do find spoken words to be much more vulnerable (though exhilarating) than performing with guitar and saxophone, perhaps because I’ve become quite comfortable performing in the latter way, perhaps the instruments in the music are almost like a shield or a crutch… I don’t know if I really believe that, it’s an interesting thought

My first attempt to this sort of thing was with @musicoftheferns on the track goblins in the yard… A banger. And I’ve been visiting the @iamloudpro loud poet open mics on occasion, and began visiting the @fillthis___ space after doing a wee featured set.

Enjoying considering this as an extra part of my craft.

i’ve been told every poet has a poem about Icarus… but I like to think my lens breaks the norm a wee bit. A cautionary tale about hubris is fruitless, debilitating to those too feart to try

Anyone else have those little melodies, little songs, that have lived in your head for a decade, don’t know where it came from, never quite found where it’s going, but it’s a comfort to come back to. This is one of mine

[Secret Show | 090826]

In the spirit of the @edfringe we put on a free, secret show on Sunday evening at @sneakypetesclub - We played songs for the last time and songs for the first time, across two totally unique 10-song sets, and had a really fantastic time doing it.

We eschewed social media promotion for this show and instead relied on our newsletter, word of mouth and on the day flyering. While this was a bit of an experiment, it felt substantially more aligned with the Day Sleeper ethos and we were thrilled that it paid off.

Quietly. Slowly. On and On.

If you were there, thanks so much for coming down.

Thank God for Air Con.

We are home and ready to nap, but would like to quickly thank everyone who came out to see us play in Leeds, Manchester and London over the last few nights!

You made every second spent on the surface of the sun (aka a standard family room at any motorway Travelodge) well worth it ✌🏻

Thanks also to @theatticleeds @thecavpresents + @theeagleinn for having us. These are the cornerstones of music as far as we’re concerned.

Also to @jonnywoodheadmusic / @sol_edwards who worked magic on sound!

ALSO the incredible bands who shared the stage; @linesof_flight @bottlemoth @cherryseraph.wav @flyover_band_ + @kingcasiomusic

We’ll do it again soon, DS x
