POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Critiquing is a new recurring series of public critiques at The Gallery, centered on the simple act of looking, experiencing and talking about art. Beginning with a shared encounter with a work of art, we gather to reflect on what we have seen.

Starting with the artists and then opening to the group, the conversation becomes an attempt to translate experience into language, testing perceptions, disagreements, and intuitions in real time. Unlike writing, which often arrives after reflection and revision, speaking remains closer to the immediacy of experience. Through the imperfect and intuitive act of conversation, meaning is not simply described but allowed to emerge collectively in the effort to articulate what an art work does with us.

I’ve spent a lot of time in doctors’ offices and hospitals this year and in my life. This is one piece in a series about my experiences of my own nonbinary gender within the rigidity of the gender binary in medical spaces and institutions.

The art that truly emulates its time is rarely captured inside classic commercial spaces at first. It lives in the interstices of the city, in transitory spaces and through artists driven gestures. It’s Nam June Paik and Laurie Anderson performing in downtown lofts, it’s Basquiat, David Hammons, Jane Dickson and many more collaborating on the Times Square Show, it’s the Impressionists organizing Le Salon des Refusés because their art was too scandalous for their time, it’s the Dadaists cabarets, the Renaissance Mannerists

Moving art forward most often happens through pushback towards the immediate context of a time and through mutual support from creatives who chose to show their work without having to compromise to a market too often driven by safety and commodity instead of novelty, experimentation and change

This is why I truly, firmly believe if you want to know where art is going, you have to go to the smaller spaces, the younger galleries, the artists run initiatives

One such endeavors that really feels special, and feels very needed in our current times is @the_g_a_ll_e_r_y. This artist run nomadic concept might be one of the most interesting shows I’ve seen of late

Walking through the former office space in Brooklyn made me feel like art was alive and expansive, responsive and engaging, vibrant. It contrasted with how dull and stall so many traditional spaces can feel

The artists behind this project are clearly having fun putting this together and curating the space with thoughtfulness and playfulness. They also run programming on a regular basis throughout the duration of the show and offer artists desk space to co-work daily/as needed

I can’t recommend enough visiting this show. Ask questions, engage with whoever is sitting the space that day. You won’t regret it
