The U.S. Marshals Service has joined the search for a man accused of carrying out armed carjackings at luxury car dealerships in Maryland and Virginia. Joe Cofer, 38, of Washington D.C. is wanted on felony carjacking charges. According to court documents, on June 29 Cofer, using identification in his name, walked into Audi Bethesda in Montgomery County, Maryland and asked to test drive a gray Audi S5. Investigators wrote that employees noticed that Cofer had visible cuts and bruises on his arms and was wearing a hospital bracelet, but allowed him to proceed with the test drive. While test driving, the employee accompanying him said Cofer made an unusual request, asking him to take pictures of him behind the wheel for his wife. The employee reportedly felt uneasy and took the key fob before stepping out of the vehicle to take the pictures. After returning Cofer’s cell phone, investigators said Cofer revealed what appeared to be a small black and gray handgun and told the employee to “walk away.” Cofer then drove away in the Audi while the employee walked back to the dealership and called 911. At the scene, responding officers and Audi staff discovered another twist. According to court documents, they learned that Cofer had arrived at Audi Bethesda in another Audi that had been reported stolen a day earlier from Audi of Tysons Corner in Vienna, Virginia, 11 miles away. According to Deputy Marshal Jennifer Mazza, investigators in Virginia noted that Audi had been stolen in a similar fashion. Investigators said a surveillance image of the suspect from the Virginia dealership matched the identification provided by Cofer. According to court documents, using Audi Connect technology, authorities tracked the stolen vehicle about six miles away in Washington D.C. Investigators said they then discovered this location was close to where Cofer had reportedly been involved in a vandalism days earlier in Silver Spring, Maryland on June 26. In that case, investigators allege Cofer broke a window, lost a significant amount of blood and was taken to a hospital. More in comments via @foxbaltimore
