🎵 Jagged Edge - Rock Baby
📀 V Recordings | 2000

💫 A hidden V Recordings weapon built from funk, darkness and pure rolling pressure

Released as V-031 with Driver on the reverse, Rock Baby came from Jagged Edge, the short-lived but formidable studio partnership of Optical and Ryme Tyme. Optical was already reshaping Drum & Bass through Virus and his revolutionary work with Ed Rush, while Ryme Tyme brought the raw instinct of an MC and producer raised within the No U-Turn movement. Together, they created something far funkier than the name might suggest.

At its heart is a bass and vocal loop lifted from George and Gwen McCrae’s 1975 funk cut “The Rub.” But rather than simply leaning on the sample, Optical and Ryme Tyme twisted it into a dark, hypnotic roller tight drums, enormous low end and that unforgettable vocal circling through the mix like a command to the dancefloor.

Its place on V Recordings matters. Founded by Bryan Gee and Jumpin Jack Frost, V had already introduced the world to essential music from Roni Size, Krust and DJ Die. Rock Baby showed that the label’s celebrated musicality could also sit comfortably beside the colder, futuristic edge of the Virus and No U-Turn camps.

Although never one of V’s most obvious anthems, its inclusion on both V Forever Baby! and the Krust and Jumpin Jack Frost-curated Retrospect Vol. 1 confirms its lasting place within the label’s history.

🇯🇪 Vanguard Archives: This is exactly what From The Crates is about looking beyond the biggest anthems and pulling out those deeper records that serious DJs never forgot. Dark, funky and devastatingly effective, Rock Baby still sounds enormous.

🖤 Not every classic demanded the spotlight. Some simply owned the dancefloor.

👇 Who remembers this one—and were you playing Rock Baby or flipping it over for Driver?
