Patuxai, the Lao Victory Monument & my family’s first couple of years in the U.S.

Standing in front of this monument, wearing something created by my cousin, Nathan, is proof of my family’s perseverance, lead by a woman not even 5 feet tall.

Over the summer, I learned more about my grandmother and my family’s journey to America. The story is filled with pain and suffering, unwary nights and unknown days, war and starvation at home, separation from each other and not knowing if the others are alive, rationing food at refugee camps and hunting for frogs in America, odd jobs and selling vegetables in the Twin Cities to make ends meet. Five children lead by one woman who didn’t speak English. We are proof of her determination.

Last weekend, I visited my Auntie Tea who moved back to Laos a couple of years ago. She and my uncle took me to temple and as we were leaving, she graciously bought ice cream for all the vendors and their children.

I don’t remember my grandmother, I have only heard stories about her. But when I watched my aunt buying ice cream for 10 people; and I think about my family who, like my cousin Nathan, has forged their own path; and look at myself in front of the Lao Victory Monument, I know what type of woman my grandmother was. We are proof of her success.

For those that know my family, we are big and loud, outgoing and sympathetic. Everyone is welcome to join us, and everyone is loved. Having such a large family is a privilege, and I know that the warmth that runs through the Sengdara family is reminiscent of my grandmother. Despite everything, she has created a family that is utterly supportive and loving. We are proof of her love.

Every time I visit Patuxai, I think about my grandmother and our family. I am proud to be here, and especially proud to wear my cousin’s work, as if I am saying, “we made it, though everything was against us. The Sengdaras are more than immigrants, we are creatives, educators, caregivers, gardeners, philanthropists, chefs, graduates, and so much more.”

I miss my family dearly, and I know that cousin group chat is boring without me 💔

I love you all, and thank you grandma.
