February 15 is International Childhood Cancer Day! I updated my #iccd graphic upon Ben’s request to show his glasses and curly chemo curls (original is the last slide). This year, the theme is #InspiringAction, so here’s what inspires me personally to take action:

1. Ben, of course! Our lives changed when he was diagnosed with B-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in May of 2023. We got to learn way too much about how intense and long treatment is for kids like him and how hard it has been to get new treatment possibilities besides the standard protocol that has been in place for like the last forty years because most funding (92%ish) goes to researching adult cancer. The current administration is not helping by freezing/ending funding. 😞

2. @vitalant and other orgs that get blood donations are super critical for kids like Ben who need regular transfusions of blood products while they are undergoing treatment! We’ve picked back up on donating blood regularly since being made aware.

3. Our bff Jenni helped to organize a neighborhood blood drive with Vitalant! While her nonprofit @do_good_shop is focused on survivors of human trafficking and oppression, not cancer kids, she has put countless hours of her own time into supporting our family since Ben was diagnosed. Her philosophy of generosity and doing good, even if “just” for the few that you are able to, inspires me to “do good for the one that you want to do for all,” whenever I donate to a cancer family’s GoFundMe or deliver a meal or DoorDash card.

4. @mon_elisa introduced me to @stbaldricks’ advocacy certification and shares info on legislation that can help kids with cancer. She also works with local businesses to provide Christmas gifts for pediatric patients (we were recipients when Ben was in the hospital at Christmas!) and models activism and education through her informative posts!

5. @mamabearsfcc was the first nonprofit that gave us tangible help and connected us with other families; they deliver hospital and clinic wagons filled with practical things that cancer families need; it’s inspiring to see how effective that is for supporting families!

#haffly2023top10 my favorite things from this year:

Omakase sushi experiences - after wanting to go for years, @porknock and I went twice! @cheffrankjapanesecuisine in Natomas switches their menu every month - so yummy the time we went! @hikari_sushi_omakase in Davis has an intimate atmosphere and a generous menu of incredibly delicious food.

@eatzumapoke in Davis needs local support this winter especially! They have my favorite flavor combinations of poke so I hope they can stick around.

@marin_kombucha’s Pinot Sage flavor is my most favorite flavor of kombucha. Light and sweet and zero sour funk, so it’s not for those who like the strong tang of most kombuchas. It’s like drinking moscato vs beer. (I don’t like the taste of beer.)

@pookapotato introduced us to Saint Angel’s triple creme guilloteau cheese, a deliciously creamy, not very smelly cheese, and it’s our family favorite. On top of a Carr’s whole wheat cracker with its sweet sandy crumble that I just discovered this year? Mmmm. So good.

I’ve subscribed to @do_good_shop’s quarterly boxes for a while now and sent them as gifts, but I got my first one for my birthday and now I’m hooked! Jenni puts together thoughtfully curated boxes of things that are fair trade or benefit survivors of trafficking and oppression, useful and/or luxurious and/or fun!

We subscribe to @whogivesacraptp’s bamboo toilet paper and Ben has started bringing his own roll to the hospital when admitted. Shipped directly to our house, no plastic!

My high school friend created @bodysoulbotanica and I love the bath tea packs! We also keep a jar of their miracle sports cream (contains CBD, but they have a formula without) handy as it really is amazing for aches and pains.

I live in these @eddiebauer Crossover Winter Trail Adventure High-Rise fleece leggings in the winter — or in chilly hospital rooms. (I just got more because they are over 50% right now - limited sizes.)

@officialkimchikawaii had a Kickstarter for a cuddly wombat plush with magnetic cube shaped poop!! Its fur is super soft and it’s more firm than squishy, perfect for a solid snuggle.

Not pictured: Making my own #corrieconnections games!

Day 19 of DI: I love this little short video of Ben POURING on the cheddar powder. His little smile that he flashes at me! 😍😍😍😍😍

I woke up at 4 for a bit and went back to sleep, then woke up to hear Ben munching on some chocolate! He had white cheddar powder with a side of popcorn for second breakfast. The neurologist came in to talk to us, then shortly after, Ben was told he had to stop eating so that they could sedate him for a spinal tap in the afternoon. He was very sad about that.

I let him be on screens nonstop to distract from his growling tummy and got a little bit of work done. Steve took the boys out of school around 2 and they came out in time for Ben’s spinal tap. We thought we might get to stay in the room and watch, but they belatedly kicked us out so we hung out in the waiting room for fifteen minutes.

The EEG tech came in next and carefully applied electrodes on Ben’s scalp, which took about fifteen minutes. He crammed popcorn in because he was so hungry! The scan ran for half an hour — and Ben actually fell asleep after we dimmed the lights. It was crazy to see his brain waves react to the occasional sounds in the room, even though he was totally asleep. She cleaned up his head, and he finally dug into his clam chowder, then decided he didn’t like clam chowder so I ate the rest. He got to open an early Christmas present from Child Life! Steve and the boys headed home.

Ben had more popcorn and chocolate for dinner and we’ve been laying low (aka he’s still on screens). We are still in the PICU tonight because the pediatric wing is full full full. And we will find out what’s next tomorrow, most likely.

Many many thanks to the @ucnskids staff for helping @fivejbiggs organize all of the Ben’s Crew shirt orders during their staff brunch!!!!! Jenni will have updates soon!

Thanks to all of you who have been unstoppable in your care for us.
