BACK TO FAILURE ANALYSIS — BONDING FAILURE OR A MATTER OF CONCEPT?

Another zirconia crown has debonded from a Ti-base.

At first glance, the evidence seems quite clear:
most of the cement remains on the Ti-base.

So… is this simply a bonding failure?

Or could there be another aspect to consider?

This is an angulated Ti-base, allowing us to correct the implant axis — a very useful concept when prosthetic positioning requires it.

But compared with a conventional straight Ti-base, the angulation can result in less cylindrical wall height available for mechanical resistance.

Add to that a very long clinical crown, and the increased lever arm may amplify lateral forces acting on the zirconia–Ti-base interface.

So perhaps the question is not whether the concept is right or wrong…

…but rather:

How does the concept change the mechanical conditions of the connection?

Is the debonding primarily related to:

🔹 The bonding interface?
🔹 Reduced mechanical resistance due to the angulated geometry?
🔹 The long clinical crown and increased lever arm?
🔹 Or simply a combination of factors?

What do you think?
