Vulnerable BTS: from the collaboration with Blind Barber (@blindbarber):

I’m sharing a rehearsal clip because the audience only sees the final / perfected product of the work us artists release. This is me visibly frustrated with myself because I knew I wasn’t sounding good in some spots of the song.

So… some of you may remember me sharing that I had reconstructive inner ear surgery (on my right ear) back in fall 2023 after a total rupture of my eardrum and 2 broken ossicle bones (3 little bones behind the eardrum) that act as sound receptors. The surgery replaced my eardrum from grafted skin and the 2 bones were replaced with prosthetics.

None of the music crew (except Ryan) [@hinksound] knew this. I chose not to disclose it because (1) I don’t like “pity parties” and (2) I didn’t want it to get in the way of learning the arrangement (mostly my own way).

Aside from the sound set-up in the rehearsal spaces being subpar, I kept saying to the crew during all the rehearsals that I couldn’t hear myself. It was a combination of the actual space but primarily because the surgery only restored my hearing back to about 80%. As a result of the injury I also have a chronic case of tinnitus; in addition to that my voice sounds muffled — as if it’s slightly behind me.

This was my first live performance in a few years and the first of any kind since the surgery (and blind folded). The challenge I am having now with music is controlling my pitch / volume because of my distorted hearing. Imagine being a vocalist (and even when simply talking) your voice sounds like it’s behind you, and also, kind of like you’re under water.

Shout out to Darryl, Ananda and as always Ryan for pep talking me through it. Darryl is a phenomenal band director and coach. He for sure knows how to control the mood and energy of a room.

Everything was all good though once I got to set with the in-ear monitors. But, you had to be at the rehearsals to see my mini meltdowns — especially this one because it was the night before shoot day… lmao 🥴

BTS Photo Dump
from shoot / collab with Blind Barber 🎥

Set life is the best life:

Thank you to all the talented creatives who rallied (and continuously rally) alongside me to materialize the POV.

The time and attention put into this collaboration, months of production planning, music rehearsals and it’s 12 hour shoot day means so much to me. None of it happens without all the expertise and hands on deck behind the scenes.

We’ll be back at it again soon. I’m just getting started with revving up the engine again! 🫂
