This time last year, we received confirmation that our book was live for purchase. We started out with a Kindle format, but then moved quickly to get a paperback version out after hearing back from folks.

Like most things that matter, this process challenged me. It was challenging to first speak an idea into the world, to carve out time to work on it, to practice patience with the steep learning curve and self-doubt, to vulnerably share it with others, and to hope that our marketing efforts are making enough impact in getting this resource into the hands that need it.

My co-author, Dr. Amy Murrell, in all her goodness and brilliance, shared my vision to offer a tool that went beyond anything we’ve ever seen or anything we could offer individually. Her intentional use of language brings compassionate understanding to trauma responses and communicates hope and direction for healing and connection.

Thank you to everyone who has purchased, reached out in support, and reviewed our book.

Books are incredible resources for promoting open discussion of challenging topics, ways to practice moving into values, and connection between you and your child. There are also added benefits of promoting cognitive and social emotional development.

Librarians are also incredible at recommending books on your topic of choice and may be able to offer similarly themed recommendations.

We are especially excited to get to highlight this beautiful book today, as it was created by G Parenting’s own Dr. Melissa Londoño Connally, and the esteemed Dr. Amy Murrell. This story centers around play-based moments of connection between a mother and son at home, while the innovative format of this book also provides compassionate psychoeducation and resources for building awareness to how trauma can show up in the body. Drs. Connally and Murrell have highlighted a multitude of play-based activities that can be implemented at home to support regulation, attunement, connection, and healing in the parent-child relationship. The glossary included in the back can also be used to empower caregivers in advocating for their own healing.

Have you read this book? What is your favorite book that highlights healing and connection?

"Our culture is known for magical realism in storytelling. It was important to embed references of this - because we get to bring magic to our childrens' lives."

It also includes back matter with additional activities and a glossary. The intention of this layout is to simultaneously engage parents and children in interactive ways, empower parents with knowledge, and offer opportunities for reparenting particularly in the context of intergenerational trauma.

The story depicts a young Latinx boy and his mother engaging in a dynamic afternoon of play at home. Although the mother is seen struggling at the beginning of the story, the story ends in connection and gratitude. Attachment, emotion regulation and validation, and the importance of psychological flexibility are seen in the story. Written by clinical psychologists, the psychoeducational information details how trauma can look in the body, especially in the context of parent-child interactions. This text is written from the perspective of a blend of traditional and mindfulness-based talk therapies (e.g., Cognitive Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Compassion Focused Therapy) as well as body-based psychotherapy traditions (e.g., Somatic Experiencing, Focusing) – the latter being mostly based on polyvagal theory. A primary intention of this book is to help parents become attuned to their own nervous systems such that they can determine the holistic balance of cognitive, emotional, and bodily interventions that would best serve their children. This social emotional learning book is written for every parent and child to empower themselves through knowledge, self-advocacy, and warming representation.
