THEY CALLED US TRUJILLO’S JEWS
Directed by Michael Puro
They Called Us Trujillo’s Jews tells the remarkable story of Sosúa, the settlement established in the Dominican Republic for European Jews fleeing Nazi persecution at a time when few countries would accept them. Through survivor testimony, archival materials, and the contemporary community, the documentary examines both the sanctuary Sosúa provided and the contradictions of its creation under Rafael Trujillo's dictatorship, considering survival, refuge, memory, and the complex legacy this history has left across generations.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 9 | RACE, REFUGE & THE STORIES WE INHERIT
The City College of New York
Join us for Toda La Verdad and They Called Us Trujillo’s Jews—two films exploring race, identity, refuge, family history, and the complicated stories we inherit.

From a Dominican American discovering African ancestry through DNA to the history of Jewish refugees who found sanctuary in Sosúa during the Trujillo dictatorship, the films ask what happens when we uncover histories that have been hidden, forgotten, or left unresolved.
6:00 PM | Reception
Generously sponsored by the Jewish Studies Department at The City College of New York
7:00 PM | Screening
Q&A with Directors Alex Vasquez Escano & Michael Puro

Congrats to our MFA film faculty, staff, and students who've made the program what it is today!

The Hollywood Reporter named the program as one of eight under-the-radar film programs in LA and NY, writing:

"The Harlem-based school’s affordable MFA program (tuition is $305 per credit for residents and $602 for nonresidents) covers both fiction and nonfiction filmmaking, for which the free biweekly Documentary Forum brings in film screenings and panel discussions that augment coursework."
