Kurdish Women in the UK: Balancing Family, Education, and Identity
Behind every degree lies a story of hard work, sacrifice, and determination.
At the inaugural Kurdish Academic Conference, held on 7 October 2026 at the University of South Wales and organised by KAWA (Kurdish All Wales Association), Kurdish women from diverse academic backgrounds gathered.
Among them were Freshta Hassanzadeh, with degrees in English Translation and Design; Chra Hussein, a software engineer and researcher at Cardiff University; Gardun Baban, with degrees in English and Optometry; Bafra Sabir, qualified in Chemical Engineering and Biomedical Science; and Bnar Sardar, with experience in Computer Science, Photography, and Kurdish Archives.
For many Kurdish women in the UK, studying involves juggling university studies, family life, and raising children, while also making time to pass on the Kurdish language and culture to the next generation.
Their achievements go beyond just earning degrees. They represent a refusal to give up on their dreams. A heartfelt thank you to all my lecturers who guided, supported, and inspired me throughout my Bachelor's @docphotusw and Master’s @maphotographybristol journeys. I am truly grateful for your knowledge, encouragement, and everything you have taught me. Your support has meant so much. ❤️ Thanks again to @kurdish_all_wales_association for this opportunity given to me.

Welsh, Not British! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿
A film about the different people who live in Wales and the different experiences we face, from stereotypes to expectations. This film ended up being very personal to me and includes most of my family which is special as carrying my Welsh identity with pride hasn’t always been something I’ve done. Through making this film I’ve realised being Welsh is a part of who we are and how lucky are we to share it with our families and ancestors who fought for our country and language to be known.
Dw i’n Caru Cymru ac rydw i mor falch o fod yn ferch o’r Cymoedd. 💐☀️🐑
