From the archives with Rancho Luna Lobos (@rancholunalobos) in Peoa, Utah. Dana and Fernando have built a life around working with sled dogs, training and racing at the highest level while giving retired racers a place to simply enjoy being dogs.

We spent some time with them three years ago to document a little of that world.

And so another trip into the wilderness nets positive thoughts, recovery, and stronger friendships. I only wish it hadn’t taken so long since I had gone out there last, and just as long since I had seen some of my dearest friends. Nothing like the desert in the tail of spring to make your own wag… Dirt gives way to rock gives way to a million years of wonder. The sky pours out rain and sunshine in the same breath, and the effort you put into shuffling your feet rewards you with answers to the mysteries of life (but also even more, newer, mysteries). Hard to pack that much into a week off of work isn’t it? But I’ll do my best and i’ll be back in time to wander those old paths and dirt roads. #roadtrip #utah #sanrafaelswell #desert

Happy Easter!

We wrapped up our winter tours last week and are now enjoying some quieter days around the kennel. We are catching up on projects while we wait for the last of the snow to melt and the ground to dry out. After that, we’ll get back into the swing of our summer tours.

A huge thank you to all of our incredible guests who joined us this season and helped make it our busiest winter yet! We are also so grateful to our guides, Nathan and Mark, for their hard work and the amazing way they connected with our guests. And of course, the biggest thanks go to our dogs! We are so grateful we get to spend each day with them!

This winter brought its fair share of challenges, with warm temps and plenty of rain. There were definitely moments when we weren’t sure the trail would hold, but it did!

Now we’re looking forward to longer days, sunshine, and the start of our summer tours. If you’re in Alaska or planning a trip this way, we’d love to have you join us! Whether it’s walking with the dogs, taking a ride on our dryland tour, or just hanging out at the kennel with the dogs, it’s a great way to experience life with the team.

Kobuk 440 Update! Rohn and the team are currently on their way to Selawik! He has 9 dogs in the team: Salt, Duchess, Foss, Mara, Hickory, Prince, Duke, Kazan, and Baffin. This race has 20 hours of mandatory rest. Rohn still needs to complete about 6.5 hours of rest. He’s about 123 miles from the finish line!

Shout out to the Kobuk 400 page for all their updates and videos! And to the villages for being so welcoming!

He’s sent a few updates along the way. As many of you saw, his tracker was having some issues. At one point it looked like he was flying up and down the trail lol! The trail from Kiana to Ambler 1 was a slog, slow and soft, which can be really mentally taxing. But the run out of the Kobuk Valley was a fun one, and the whole team was happy to roll into Ambler 2 in high spirits.

I’m incredibly proud of how Rohn and this young team are doing. For a lot of the dogs, this is their first season racing, and for three of them, it’s their very first race.

While Rohn’s been focused on the trail, we’ve been keeping things moving back home. Huge thanks to our handler, Nathan, for taking care of the dogs so I can focus on the kids. And to our guide, Mark, for helping keep tours running smoothly. I’m also grateful to Sweetie for helping with the kids and taking Kakadin for a few nights. And of course, thank you to our amazing sponsors and supporters—we couldn’t do this without you!

The Family That Sleighs Together, Stays Together!

Today was a true family effort as we took 40 guests out for an unforgettable sled dog experience—all at the same time! With an unseasonably warm winter and low snow, Rohn’s parents at Happy Trails Kennels have been running tours out of our location and sharing trails with us. Today, they brought in a motor coach full of guests, and we pulled out all the stops—even Martin himself jumped on a sled to take guests out!

It was a picture-perfect day with sunny skies and Denali making an appearance. Susitna Sled Dog Adventures has been affectionately called “Happy Trails North,” and it couldn’t be more fitting. The dogs in both kennels are family, and so are we—Rohn and Martin had a blast running teams together.
