I have an essay in this new anthology (coming soon from the good people at @dogsectionpress). My essay explores anarcho-punk’s role in revitalising the fortunes of the domestic anarchist movement during the 1980s, paying particular attention to the role that culture plays in class re-composition and the formation of antagonistic social movements.

This essay has been informed by the work @dunstanbruce and I have been engaged in (for the last year and a half), building a dedicated and open access anarcho-punk archive at @maydayrooms, and draws upon theoretical frameworks first developed by dissenting marxists, and others, in (around and against) the Italian communist movement ✊❤️🖤🔥

This is the first - in a series of essays - that myself, @jam.sq and others will be writing over the coming months, arguing that Britain experienced its own version of ‘autonomia’ (the large heterodox social movement that rocked Italian society in the 70s) at the close of the 1970s/early 80s. The evidence for which I have identified across various collections in @maydayrooms vast archival holdings.

Much like its Italian counterpart, ‘Britain’s autonomia’ also had ‘fuzzy boundaries’ that ran across formal and informal political networks, took ‘traditional’ as well as more unorthodox organisational forms and expressed itself through a myriad of cultural outputs -notably via punk & experimental music, radical theatre, direct action collectives, zine and print projects and in experiments with collective living that would also be found in the activity of the early ‘rave’ scene a few years later.

Despite their strategic differences, many who were active across these various terrains shared a common set of theories and languages (imported, consciously or not, from the Italian context) that allowed them to make sense of the world around them and then act upon it.

These essays, cataloging this subterranean history, will eventually be collected together in a single volume - under the working title ‘The Global 77!’

At the end of last year we produced this wonderful children’s history-from-below book for @dogsectionpress 'The Flag of Liberty: A True History of the Most Notorious Pirates’. A fictional story inspired by true historical accounts of life at sea, it gives young readers "a valuable alternative perspective on the Golden Age of Piracy – with a focus on collective justice, democratic decision making, shared spoils, and, of course, revenge!”.
Beautifully illustrated by Italian artist DoubleWhy @doublewhy_y and designed by @mattbonner.art Matt Bonner, it gives a more realistic retelling of the standard Hollywood pirate story, and to quote these anarchic anthropomorphic animals, "We are one and all resolve to stand by one another!”.
