The Geographic Center of the Contiguous United States, located 3 miles outside of Lebanon, Kansas, was established in 1918 by the United States Geological Survey as, “the point where a plane map of the 48 states would balance if it were of uniform thickness.” Its commemorative park, established in 1941, has since changed stewardship and transformed into an American roadside attraction with four primary structures as noted by Google Maps: the Historical Landmark, Picnic Pavilion, Outdoor Barbecue Grill, and the U.S. Center Chapel.

Adjunct Assistant Professors Alaina Read Griffin (@podium_language) and Cody Tyler Schueller (@dolce_dongle) will talk about “On the Middle,” a documentation carried out by them of the Geographic Center of the Continental United States, located 3 miles outside of Lebanon, Kansas. Established in 1918 by the US Geological Survey, it is a tangible intersection of the geospatial methods that mapped the continent, the networks that service it, and the cultural norms that were instituted as a result. On this site are four specific architectural structures: the historic landmark, barbecue grill, picnic pavilion, and chapel. Together, these are coaxed from the large-scale modernist grid and emerge (perhaps unintentionally) as postmodern architecture typifying rural America.

“On the Middle” is funded through the 2025 Dean’s Professional Development Funds.

“Lewerentz Divine Darkness,” screening of the documentary about the Scandinavian architect Sigurd Lewerentz, directed by Sven Blume.

Sigurd Lewerentz (1885–1975) did not seek fame. A contemporary of Alvar Aalto and Gunnar Asplund, Lewerentz left behind some of the most profound works in Scandinavian design. But he shunned interviews and avoided public interventions. Instead, he let his buildings speak for themselves in a language of poetic brutality, austere beauty, and reverence for light and shadow.

“Lewerentz Divine Darkness” begins decades after the architect’s death, when an unexpected discovery in a root cellar cracks open the mystery of his work. A treasure trove of beautiful black-and-white film clips and audio recordings reveals fascinating moments between the architect and his friend, Bernt Nyberg, guiding us on an unexpected journey into Lewerentz’s singular legacy.

Introduction by Adjunct Assistant Professor Cody Tyler Schueller (@dolce_dongle). The screening will be followed by a conversation and Q&A with director Sven Blume.

Free and open to all.

2.23—6 pm
Room 1300 A+DS
845 W Harrison Street
Chicago, Illinois

The U.S. screening tour is supported by the Embassy of Sweden in Washington, D.C.
