“…to say that these writers are ‘fence-sitters’ is to say that each of them occupies a distinguished grey area in the literary field. They are writers who challenge their readers by means of density and complexity, but who exclude no one from that readership in the name of an academic purity, or a pre-ordained set of obscurities. These are writers who adhere to the particular sound of their own voices in collision with the sounds of the world. Most of all, and most importantly, they provide pleasure.” — Rebecca Wolff (@dolldrum), Editor’s Note, FENCE (Spring ’98) 🍂

Hudson’s future runs through the First Ward: our city’s civic, economic, and creative heart. From the courthouse to the waterfront, this ward carries Hudson’s tax base, history, and potential. Its upcoming election will decide whether City Hall governs or performs.

We’re backing Donna Streitz, Henry Haddad, and Patti Ramoska: serious, fair, and grounded in the facts. Hudson needs leaders who build, not posture.

🗳️ Vote First Ward. Vote for growth, transparency, and real leadership.

Thank you for asking how to support FENCE during this time! While FENCE did not have a 2025 NEA grant, we feel for the nonprofit publishers and literary arts organizations that have suddenly lost funding they were counting in their budgets. This damage will be felt across and beyond our circles.
*
Fence did not apply for a 2026 NEA grant. Doing so would put the writers and artists Fence publishes in danger.
*
State arts councils receive allocations from the NEA as well; for example, NYSCA (New York State Council of the Arts) receives 20% of its funding from the NEA. We may see cuts to state arts grant funding next. Please donate to your favorite small presses and magazines now. Buy the books and magazines we publish. Help find support for independent thinking and freedom of expression— we need you now. It’s time.
*
If you’d like to think of Fence among your actions, please go to fenceportal.org/support.
Thank you!!
