POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

🎬 PROMISES is coming to Toronto.

The Sikh Heritage Museum of Canada is proud to sponsor this special IFFSA Toronto screening of PROMISES, featuring Kabir Bedi in a powerful story about an aging Sikh World War veteran, a promise made during the Second World War, and the silence, sacrifice, identity, and belonging carried across generations.

Some stories remind us what has been carried quietly for too long.

Make this one of the PROMISES you keep.

🎬 PROMISES
📅 Monday, October 12
⏰ 6:30 PM
📍 Cineplex Cinemas Courtney Park, Mississauga

Tickets available through the link in our bio.

Congratulations to Steve Purewal, Indus Media Foundation, and the entire team behind this powerful feature, and thank you to everyone who helped bring it to life. This was not only a film premiere. It was part of a larger effort to correct a narrative that is long overdue for correction and to bring forward stories of Sikh service, sacrifice, and contribution that have too often been left out of public memory.

Thank you as well to all those who supported this work, including the partners, funders, organizers, speakers, and supporters who made the evening possible.

A few moments from the night, including remarks from Prime Minister Mark Carney, Senator Baltej Dhillon, Steve Purewal, and Pardeep Singh Nagra, along with guests engaging with the Sikh history and artifacts in your continued collaboration with Indus Media Foundation, display at the Canadian War Museum.

At a time when there is still no meaningful acknowledgment, documentation, or permanent display of Sikh contributions at the Canadian War Museum, evenings like this matter. They remind us why this work is so important and why these stories must continue to be brought forward.

*Promises*, led by Steve Purewal and Indus Media Foundation, is part of a much bigger conversation about remembrance, representation, and the responsibility to ensure Sikh contributions are not overlooked any longer.

We are honoured to welcome Angela Aujla (@angela_aujla ) as a keynote speaker at Toshakhana: House of Heer: Celebrating Sikh Women.

Angela Aujla is a visual artist whose work examines the intersections of memory, diaspora, and cultural identity. Drawing on postcolonial theory and gender studies, her narrative artworks reanimate untold histories and explore how objects, symbols, and family archives carry meaning across generations within the Sikh diaspora.

Working across illustration, collage, embellished photography, textile, and mixed media installations, her work has been exhibited in galleries and public art spaces across Canada, with installations in Toronto, Vancouver, Surrey, Barrie, Innisfil, and Oro-Medonte. Her work is also part of Humber College’s permanent art collection.

Angela is a Professor of Visual Culture at Georgian College, where she continues to inspire new generations of artists and scholars.

Update from SHMC.

We wanted to share an update in response to the many questions from our well wishers. Thank you for the love, ardaas, and seva. The Museum is temporarily closed as all our volunteers have been working around the clock on recovery and clean up.

Our April 4 Gala is still on and a special announcement is coming soon. Supporting the Gala will directly fund our rebuild. (linkinbio)

In the spirit of Sukh and Dukh, and with Chardi Kala, we move forward together.

Announcement - We are heartbroken to share that the Sikh Heritage Museum of Canada was badly damaged yesterday due to flooding caused by a fire in the unit above. Our space will likely need to be fully gutted, and books, resources, and artifacts were impacted.

In the spirit of Sukh and Dukh and with Chardi Kala, we will move forward. We are hurt, but not broken.

We remain committed to our April Gala and will share updates soon. If you are able, please support our recovery efforts: https://shmc.ca/donation

We are honoured to announce Harleen Singh as the Keynote Speaker for Toshakhana - House of Heer: Celebrating Sikh Women.

A writer and researcher devoted to the social and literary history of colonial Punjab, Harleen began documenting the stories of Partition survivors in 2014, inspired by the lived experiences of his own grandparents. His work led to the creation of The Lost Heer Project, dedicated to preserving the voices of women in Punjab’s history.

Be part of a powerful evening honouring the voices and vision of Sikh women.
