“The earth belongs to the living.”—Thomas Jefferson

Provenance (n.)—the origin and documented history of something rare and significant; the unbroken thread connecting what exists today to everything that came before it, stretching back further than memory and deeper than the soil itself.😌

🍇There are wineries you visit and wineries you experience. @kingfamilyvineyards , situated on a remarkable 327-acre farm in the Monticello countryside—with every grape an estate-grown expression of the land beneath it—falls firmly into the second category. Despite misty skies and relentless humidity, my beloved Chris @finickyfeline and I motored our way via golf cart through sprawling vineyards before touring production and tasting with Tom his daughter Victoria. It was a visit that felt less like a winery excursion and more like a quiet conversation with the land itself.😉

🗞️As it turns out, the land has quite a story to tell. The name “Mountain Plains” first appeared on a deed drafted in 1773 by Thomas Jefferson, transferring ownership of a land grant established in 1737. Roseland Farm now sits on part of that original grant. That heritage demanded an equally extraordinary wine to honor it.

🍷The 2022 “Mountain Plains”—a Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Franc (45%); Merlot (37%) and Petit Verdot (18%)—delivers precisely that. Just 3000 bottles produced by award-winning craftsman Matthieu Finot from hand-selected estate fruit, extended maceration in open-top concrete tanks, and 22 months of individual aging in new French oak.

🏆Gold medal winner and proud member of the 2026 Monticello Cup Case.

🍷Opulent and commanding in the glass—black currant, plum and dark cherry on the nose with whispers of graphite and violet. A dense palate with firm tannins framing flavors of vanilla and oak spice, lifted by bright acidity and a finish that simply refuses to fade.

🍽️: Pair alongside a perfectly seared ribeye 🥩 or braised short ribs.😋

🍷Some wines taste like a place. This one tastes like a place with a deed.😉

🥂Cheers and what’s in YOUR glass? 🤔

Tomboy is made from Petit Verdot from Turk Mountain Vineyard in Afton. The vineyard is operated by @domainefinotva Back in the day, I worked for Matthieu, and he has since become a friend and mentor. He still answers all of my questions as long as I bring chocolate and make a coffee for whoever is in the lab.
.
Also being called a tomboy is a compliment in my book.

Day one is wrapped ❣️

What started as a group of strangers quickly became new friends. We shared stories, perspectives, laughter, and deep conversations into the history of wine in context to our region, that reminded us why Oeno Camp exists.

A heartfelt thank you to the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center for welcoming us and laying down the historical context, Ethos Wine & Tea, Erin Scala and Desiree Harrison Brown for their incredible knowledge, Yolonda Coles Jones for grounding us, Pearl Island for nurturing us, Joel Cuellar for crafting an unforgettable cocktail experience, and the many Virginia winemakers who joined us to share your time, stories, and wines.

This community showed up in every way today, and we’re grateful.

A new adventure awaits tomorrow as we continue exploring Virginia wine country together.

That’s a wrap for our dynamic VA Wine stand D54 at the London Wine Fair.
Thank you London for your positive energy and feedback!

Working as a group was uplifting! We showed the UK market the traditions and the character of Virginia Wines.

For @kingfamilyvineyards, the wines were presented with a French accent as Matthieu and I proudly showcased our lineup of Viognier, Cab Franc, Meritage and Mountain Plains Red from the Monticello AVA.

From journalists to wine bar owners, wine educators, importers and distributors, meetings and tastings were all very encouraging! See you soon again 🍷💫🍇

Still thinking about this weekend. Our Taste of Virginia Grand Tasting brought together an incredible group of friends, partners, and producers—and the energy spoke for itself.

Thoughtful wines, standout dishes, and a shared pride in what Virginia continues to build. Thank you to everyone who joined us and made it what it was.

We’re already looking forward to the next one. ❤️🍷

Alphabetical order. Major takeaways this year include: 1. People first always. 2. You can make wine taste like it’s from anywhere. 3. More bottle exchanges! 4. Life was better when I couldn’t taste mouse 5. I am so lucky to have been introduced to the work of some Great winemakers early in their career

@beravittorioefigli with my wife on her 30th birthday at @restaurantaugustneworleans - This wine was a circus show
@buelansherry Manzanilla made all other manzanilla I’d had before seem pointless
@champagneulyssecollin to celebrate the end of an era with @cocoesi
Corbineau forever
Dujac graciously shared by a new friend and mentor, vintage charts are stupid
@domainefinotva purchased at @happygeminidc , made me a new friend and materialized a road trip with my oldest, probably my wine of the year
@henriquez_rober is a miracle worker, thank you for introducing me and so many others to his stuff @han.et
If Dani @_la_onda charged what his wines are actually worth I wouldn’t be able to afford them
Same with Patrick @patoiswine - There are no comparisons I can make that don’t sound hyperbolic and ridiculous. A generational talent. this was my wedding wine.
And same with Brent @stagiaire.wine - This bottle is like a fully formed concept album from name to label art to what shows up in the glass. Didn’t know still cider could do this.

As the year winds down, I’ve been thinking about how 2025 actually played out 🍷

What started as a pretty reasonable goal—300 Virginia wines and 30+ wineries visited—turned into something much bigger. We finished the year at 578 Virginia wines from 93 wineries, with 62 new-to-us producers. Of those, 56 were wineries we visited in person. That wasn’t the plan… it just kept building momentum.

We also made a point to be more intentional. AVA-specific goals helped diversify what we were tasting and sharpen how we think about Virginia wine beyond any single region 🗺️. Add in formal education through @wsetglobal and @cornelluniversity , and this year felt like real progress—not just volume 🎓📚.

But none of this happens in a vacuum. The people made this journey what it was. New wine friends in Virginia helped guide our path and pushed us toward experiences that made these goals possible 🤝🍇. At the same time, new wine friends in Texas expanded our palate and perspective through collaboration, shared bottles, and constant learning 🤠🍷.

Now comes the harder question: how do you follow up a year like this?

2025 set a bar.
2026 is about figuring out how to raise it. 🥂
