A little reflection on what was my 10th grape harvest this year - and another challenging one. The earliest harvest ever recorded in the region of Champagne, shaped by an increasingly unpredictable climate. But wine is never only about grapes. It is about the hands that pick them, the land beneath our feet, long days, shared meals, good bottles, and the people who make me feel at home - and i’m so grateful for all of it.

Two young growers at @convivial.sg, the place to discover many (new and) exciting Grower Champagnes.

The Chapter 2 of @romain_henin_vigneron‘s L’Odyssee Petillantes is from the 2023-base with 50% Meunier and the other half mostly Pinot. Compared to Chapter 1 (and also Leon’s Enchevêtrer below), there’s more finesse and elegance, more akin to a BdB. Incredibly easy to drink and enjoy right now — the kind of bottle that asks for no overthinking, just another glass.

@domaineleon is another exciting young grower, bringing a fresh and distinctive perspective to Champagne. From Landreville, the 2019 “Enchevêtrer” is a fascinating wine that is quintessentially Pinot, showing fresh, predominantly red fruits. There’s plenty of roundness and juicy fruit on the palate, making this both serious and rather immediately enjoyable. The French name translates to “entangle”, perhaps a nod to the blend of two vineyards.

Domaine Léon Enchevêtrer is a Blanc de Noirs Champagne made from 100% Pinot Noir with zéro dosage and natural yeasts, partly aged in wood;

I really enjoyed the red fruit, the mineral tension, the lovely creamy texture and the depth.

Domaine Léon @domaineleon was revived in 2019 by Clément Robert. The name Léon goes back to his great-grandfather, Léon Robert. The vineyard covers approximately 7.7–8 ha; there are only 5,000 bottles in total. The estate operates biodynamically and is part of the young generation of winemakers producing natural champagnes that reflect their terroir. An exciting, very small-scale production that is not yet widely known.

One more reason to love the Côte des Bar. 🐽

Welcome Domaine Léon — the newest addition to the Truff Le Pig portfolio.

After gaining experience at Champagne Fleury and vineyards across the USA, Australia and New Zealand, Clément Robert returned to his family’s estate with a clear vision: organic and biodynamic farming, vintage-only Champagnes, and zero dosage.

Every parcel is farmed and vinified separately using indigenous yeasts, then aged in oak barrels to express the unique identity of each terroir.

Pure, precise, and unmistakably Côte des Bar.

Discover @domaineleon at Truff Le Pig.

There are moments that quietly remind you why you chose this path so many years ago. Les Belles Rencontres was one of those moments.

This year, our journey led us to Chablis because we wanted to support a new idea.

A gathering built on trust. A place where winemakers invite those whose work they genuinely admire. No medals. No rankings. No competition. Just wine, friendship and conversation.

After more than twenty-five years devoted to natural wine, we arrived with curiosity rather than expectations. And we left with something even more valuable.

Hope.

Not because every bottle was a natural wine.

It wasn’t.

But because we could feel that something is moving.

Among many of the younger generation of Chablis growers there is a growing curiosity. A willingness to ask questions that would hardly have been asked a decade ago.

Can we intervene less? Can healthier vineyards produce more expressive wines? Can we trust nature just a little bit more?

There may not be many answers yet, but the questions are exciting.

More than twenty-five years ago we chose our direction. Looking back after all these years, this weekend only strengthened that conviction.

Once you’ve experienced wines that are truly alive, there is simply no turning back.

Chablis already enjoys worldwide recognition. The name opens doors everywhere. There is no urgent commercial reason to change.

And yet... some young growers are quietly exploring another direction. Not because they have to, but because they genuinely want to discover how far their terroir can speak when nature is allowed to take the lead.

Whether that journey eventually leads to natural wine is almost beside the point.

The willingness to ask the question is where every meaningful journey begins.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who made Les Belles Rencontres possible. To every grower who opened bottles, shared ideas, welcomed visitors and believed that bringing passionate people together is always worth the effort.

Creating something new always takes courage.

We sincerely hope this was only the first chapter.

See you next year, Chablis.
