Four men, no shirts and a suspicious amount of eye contact

I’d never travelled solo before.

And I think part of the reason I’d avoided it was because I’ve always found situations where I don’t know anyone pretty uncomfortable.

If I compare to when I lived in Barcelona. I felt incredibly self-conscious, struggled socially, and the isolation led me to some real low points.

Admittedly a few years later but Bali felt completely different.

Walking into a hostel alone. Starting conversations with strangers. Sitting down at a table knowing nobody. Making plans without knowing who would be there.

There were moments I felt self-conscious. But I sat with them, and the more I did the easier it became.

A lot of people think confidence means not feeling uncomfortable. For me I think it’s more about knowing you’ll be okay when you’re not.

It’s human to feel awkward. It’s human to overthink. It’s human (and sometimes nice) to be nervous.

You just don’t always have to let those feelings stop you doing things anyway.
