Preguntas Con Domi

¿Que le preguntarías?

El miedo siempre está.

No se va, no importa cuántas olas hayas remado antes.
Uno se prepara meses para un momento que dura segundos. Y cuando la ola llega, ya no hay tiempo para pensar. O estás lista, o no.

Por eso entreno todos los días. Por eso también me recupero todos los días.

Porque lo que se ve en el agua es solo el resultado de todo lo que se hizo antes, en silencio, cuando nadie miraba.

Soy Dominique, y soy atleta @icewalls.

Honored to co-host the Big Wave Awards last weekend in California with @sharpxxl at the @lidotheaternewportbeach! 🏆 The @bigwavechallenge brought the bravest watermen and waterwomen together to celebrate the Biggest Wave, Paddle Award, Ride of the Year, Worst Wipeout, and Performance of the Year. We also awarded a Young Gun award and Videographer of the Year, in addition to tributes to legends of surf photography. Mahalo to everyone that came out to celebrate this inspiring sport, and to @aquamarseafood for all their support.

Honored to have won the @bigwavechallenge Women’s Biggest Paddle Wave Award last night!

There are so many surfers who I’ve looked up to for years who have won this award or been nominated for it, so being part of that group is something I’m really proud of.

Last winter I worked harder than I ever have toward big wave surfing. I spent countless hours training in the gym, prone paddling, and lifeguarding, while getting as many sessions as I could at Mavs, even when the conditions were less than ideal. Everything was with the goal of being prepared when the big swells did come.

The winter season was starting to come to an end when the Todos Santos event was called on. I had never been to this wave, so my goal was to be a sponge and soak up as much information as I could from @gerglong and all the surfers who had put in time out there. I knew I had done the work at home, both in and out of the water to surf the wave, so now I just had to learn the lineups and trust that preparation. A clean wave came to me in the first 15 minutes of the heat and I knew I had to send it. That was definitely the biggest wave I have paddled into so far, and it felt amazing to kick out in the channel and know that the work I had put in was starting to pay off.

Thank you to my sponsors @raulcastillomartialarts @norcalsurfshop @veiasupplies @oneillusa @oneillwomens @humesupernatural @sharpeyesurfboards @surf_iconoclast @homegrownsurfboards @powerlinesproductions for making it possible for me to chase big waves all across the world!

Lastly, to all the boys in HMB — thanks for always pushing me to send it and having my back all winter long. Can’t wait to see what El Niño brings us!

Being a big-wave surfer is hard. There’s barely any money in it. The waves are scary AF. The consequences are real. And for women, it’s historically been a very male dominated space.

So why do we do it? Because we love it.

We do it to explore possibility. To find out what we’re capable of. To keep chasing that feeling we had when we first learned to surf, when something felt impossible…until suddenly, we did it.

And thankfully, the sport is evolving. There are more women in the water, and more men cheering us on.

Last night, my mentee @zoe__chait won the Women’s Biggest Paddle Award 🥇

Five years ago, I remember surfing Ocean Beach with Zoe when she was afraid out there. Now she’s literally at the top of the game 🔥

I still want to play the game and find out what’s possible for me 😉 BUT the COOLEST part of doing this for a long time is getting to help someone else discover what’s possible for them too.

And watching Zoe do exactly that…so f*cking cool. Pics by @richardhallman_photo and me 🤙🌊

Still in awe about last night! So many legends from all around the world, it was amazing to hear all the stories and realize how much we all love big waves in our own way and how happy the ocean makes us!
Something that almost everyone talked about was their team so I have to thank my team @nazarenexus for keeping safe out there in Nazaré, my driver @ivo_cacao for always getting me in the right spot to take my photographs, my love @stephanie_paiis for always believing in my crazy visions, and all of my close friends that gave me the courage to follow this from the start 🙏🏻🔥🙏🏻

Congratulations to @rodrigokoxa for winning the “Men’s Biggest Wave of the Year” it’s an honor to share this moment with you and have my photograph also recognized for this wave 🏆

Huge thanks to @sharpxxl and @aquamarseafood for hosting the lovely big shots dinner in tribute to the big wave photographers and a stellar awards ceremony 👏🏻👏🏻

It’s a pleasure to be welcomed on board with such a special group of surfers, videographers and photographers that make up the world of big wave surfing!

Last but definitely not least huge shout out to @richardhallman_photo such a legend, thank you for all these amazing memories 📸

Father you can’t imagine what it means that I was able to share this with you and have you here for these awesome couple of days ❤️

Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose…

I’m so happy to have made my way to the final of @bigwavechallenge. It’s such a dream to be part of it. I really wanted to bring the trophy home for my team because I truly believe we deserved it.

It’s always so hard to say who surfed the biggest wave. Every wave was on a different day, in a different place, and in different conditions. Rodrigo’s wave at Nazaré was more on the inside, and it was such a crazy wave, probably one of the biggest barrels of all time. Our wave was much further outside, on a more stormy day.

From my point of view, in big-wave surfing, the line, the commitment, and whether you complete the wave should all be taken into consideration. Like in freeride skiing, there is a start and a finish and making it through the full line matters.

If a surfer has to straighten out, jump off, or loses balance because the line was not right from the beginning, I personally believe that should affect the way the wave is judged or rewarded. That’s just my vision of big-wave surfing and the way I see it.

That said, I’m grateful to have shared the stage with these legends. I love you @rodrigokoxa and @lucaschumbo 💗 See you next season.

Thanks @bigwavechallenge for making this event happen. I’m proud to be part of it, and I still have a lot of time to come back stronger.

Thanks @redherringsnazare @paul_loustau @katzsurf for that crazy ride!
@arthurpicardphoto for capturing it 🎥
