Last night’s performance of Translating Sonnets was fire! 🔥

What made the evening so special wasn’t just revisiting Shakespeare. It was watching his words spark conversations across four centuries through an extraordinary group of actors and poets.

It was an honor to share the stage with artists I’ve admired for decades, like @regieguy, while also discovering so many gifted new voices. That’s one of the greatest joys of being part of the literary community: honoring those who paved the way while celebrating the next generation.

I’ll admit, I was never much of a Shakespeare fan. But this project showed me how alive his work can become when placed in dialogue with the present.

Endless thanks to Modesto “Flako” Jimenez, Thomas Fucaloro, Cynthia Rodriguez, ¡Oye! Group, Creating Space, my brilliant scene partner Paola Alexandra Soto, the entire cast and crew, and everyone who filled the theater. The audience’s energy made the night unforgettable.

Here are a few moments from backstage and after the show. Grateful for the collaborations and the community. Here’s to many more.

“De vez en cuando, hay que hacerse mulo y patear.” - frase Dominicana ~ (our amazing playwright @dominicanpie )

In one staged reading, I learned so much about the history of DR, collaborated with the kindest and most talented artists, while being tossed in air ~ I couldn’t ask for more.

Thank you to everyone who made this incredible experience a reality🙏🏾💫 Hasta la próxima!

🔸ONE CATCHES LIGHT🔹
In partnership with ArtsHub, OYE! Group presents @dominicanpie ✨ Join us for a FREE staged reading of “Lucha Libre”

In Trujillo’s Dominican Republic Yaneliz is raised to be a “good girl,” but when she gives into her dream of becoming the first luchadora (female wrestler) in a family of luchadores (male wrestlers), she will come to understand that “la lucha” is not just for the ring. As the age-old battles of men versus women, parents versus children, and might versus right step into the ring, who will be the victor and who will be unmasked?

Happy Astrological New Year • Spring Equinox • New Moon in Aries & Aries Season

So I have things to say. Lately, it has felt like I’ve been able to hold many truths all in one full space. The first is that I love being an artist. And the rest range from feeling safe in being seen to navigating changes in my life to finally accepting the most distorted parts of being able to perform for me. So for me, what that looks like is actually suffering from immense social & performance anxiety. But it has started to release from my body. And I’m feeling a lot more freeeeeeeeeee.

This time with all the other responsibilities of my life & being in performance spaces at the same time, I didn’t fall. I actually thrived. 🦋 I was able to hold space for the fear that I go through and the absolute love & pure celebratory joy I have for choosing this life. The even wilder thing, is in my last performance I got a chance to tell a story about myself, and finally opened up about all of it publicly. And then proceeded to sing a song that was so in alignment with the way that I want to take up space as an artist, actor, singer performer person now. But, if I can be quite transparent all four opportunities I have had in 2026 no matter what size were so in alignment with me. I got to watch and be part of really cool work and it feels gooooodddd. But, the true win was through the kind and warm people I have met and the re-integration of who I am in this time and space was stronger than the fear. And it always has been, but now I can feel safe in my body enough to know it. I’ve been centering joy, true alignment, and my authentic self so much more fiercely ever since. So I guess, more on what feels like a “come back era” I’m sure.. but for now. I’m happy to be here.

Ps: I forgot about the 20 people rule that you can tag on here.

I promise, I love everyone down. But, If I missed you it was cause I was trying to get everyone 😂

At Hot Mic Night next Thursday, Paola will share a newly rewritten opening moment from her play. This is a chance to test how the piece introduces its world and sets its tone. She will be looking to feel out what’s clear, what’s felt, and what still wants sharpening. Beginnings matter, and this one is still becoming. And YOU can be an early audience member who helps shape that becoming by simply showing up authentically and openly. Have you gotten your ticket?

Paola Alexandra Soto (she/her) is an award-winning playwright, actor, director, and creative producer, and the co-founder of the Obie Award–winning Dominican Artists Collective. Her work has been developed with Ars Nova, Oye Group, Roundabout, and Columbia University, and centers diasporic memory, humor, and cultural specificity.
