👑 Monday – Adults Day Exit stage left… the Death of Carnival. Only to be reborn again.
And yet… the “false king” called our mas boring. But perhaps that’s the irony — what some call boring is what we truly yearn for in our hearts: depth, roots, meaning, connection.

Don Travis and Wayne Crichlow are the visionary photographers and community advocates behind Future Hackney, a groundbreaking initiative that merges photographic activism with social engagement to amplify the voices of inner-city marginalized communities. Their collaborative approach redefines how photography can serve as both an art form and a tool for social justice, through authentic storytelling and community empowerment.

At the heart of Future Hackney’s mission is a commitment to preserving the cultural heritage of inner-city neighborhoods while addressing the challenges posed by gentrification and commercialization. Don and Wayne’s work captures the essence of these communities, creating visual narratives that honor their histories, struggles, and aspirations. Their photography serves as a dynamic form of activism, ensuring that the stories of urban life remain rooted in the voices of the people who live them.

“We co-create in the storytelling, writing and oral histories and reminisces with the locals and let them shape the direction of their history. We exhibit the oral histories and photos on the street in their communities and at free galleries within the neighborhood.”

“Desmond Decker, who went into the British charts in 1969 with a song called ‘The Israelites’, which became number one. He became the first Reggae superstar, and his success coincided with his time in ‘The Aces.

We had a nightclub licence, but it was a very tough time and the police tried to close us down and took me to court fourteen times. They would try other tactics like pretend raids. They would come in and of course black people who had experience with the police before, would march straight out. @lettsdon the cultural historian spoke of the relevance of my club. The Four Aces, we were the original and our cultural space was a very special. In the late 1980’s the Four Aces became The Four Aces incorporating Labyrinth. ‘Prodigy’ got their first big break.” Newton Dunbar

THE STRIP

We are ecstatic to announce a photo of the full crew taken on Ridley Road by @chasingthelight_67 is going to be displayed publicly at the ‘Outside Gallery’ on Dalston lane until August next year just opposite the Hackney Archives (where we screened the first showing of our documentary). Two of our members are Hackney born and bred and one of our members Little Andy of Gemi ‘In Ting’ Magic Sound System held a residency across the road for 3 years at the legendary Four Aces Club. The photo also features a QR code linking to some local history and history of our Sound.

It coincides with an exhibition of the same name ‘The Strip’ at the ‘Inside Gallery’ @bsmtspace featuring landmark photos of the local area and its local people by @chasingthelight_67 @don.travis1 from 19th until the 29th of this month. Make sure to check both out
