Last year, a great addition came to Westmount with the opening of @spuntino_mtl by the @donato.group. The neighborhood was thirsting for something fun, hip, affordable and straddling the line between casual and sophisticated. Having been twice already, I can attest this place is solid.

The Italian resto/bar just blessed us Westmounters with something else we’ve been lacking: one of those cool outdoor patios to make other neighborhoods jealous.

On Tuesday I was invited to check out its official unveiling. On the menu: Italian wines, a spritz bar, hors d’oeuvres, artwork, a live jazz set, DJ and gelato counter (the last two not filmed here).

Disclaimer: this was an invitation.

Second dinner at Westmount’s @spuntino_mtl by @donato.group. I won’t bore you with a long essay; read my first review from October of last year.
.
Summary: cool spot, happening vibe, good-to-very-good food, reasonable prices, moderate portion sizes, fine service. Basically a more polished version of Gentile Café on the other side of Westmount.

When @ristorante_donato landed in Westmount a few years ago, it offered the wealthy neighborhood a posh Italian option for brunch, lunch and dinner. Fast forward to this fall, and the @donato.group seems poised to dominate the Victoria Village sector with – count them – three additional addresses. @donato_gelato caught the end of summer, @dburger_mtl has yet to open, so tonight it’s @spuntino_mtl’s turn to be reviewed.
.
Taking over from multiple short-lived ventures, Spuntino is set in the location last occupied by Brasserie Melrose. The space is beautifully redone with green/pink hues, abundant mirrors and patterned tiled flooring. The crowd was scarce on Halloween night – everyone is probably busy trick or treating – and I only spotted Indiana Jones and Lara Croft costumes.
.
Spuntino feels like a more accessible version of Donato, with a similar menu of pizza, pasta and appetizers, but cheaper. Sandwiches are also an option, but I kept those for a future lunch visit (who eats sandwiches at night?). Our grilled octopus salad and eggplant parmigiana were great and contrastive; light and fresh versus cheesy and zesty. The Roman-style pizza – pizzette really – were small rectangles cut into six bite-sized squares. I found the crust kinda hard and the tomato sauce kinda flat; I’ll probably try a pasta dish next time.
.
All-in-all, a cool neighborhood spot sold as a cafe/snack bar, although some of the prices – while lower than Donato’s – are still closer to a restaurant’s. To me, Spuntino sits perfectly in the middle of the price/setting spectrum with Gentile at one end and Donato at the other.
