Let's talk a bit about weight loss. I have been VERY overweight in the past, though it's been a long time. I have also been very much underweight. I have weighed anywhere from 130 lbs. to 220+ lbs. at this height (160 in these pics, and currently 172-ish).

When @donchamplin took these photos, I told him what I thought my body fat % was. He said "I think you're leaner than you think you are". I think he was right. I'd been that lean (as low as 158) for 6+ weeks, and it was beginning to negatively affect me. My sleep, my energy, my hormones. I only had to gain about 3-4 lbs to rise above the threshold my body wanted.

I don't just walk around at single digit body fat all the time. I do have visible abs year round, but part of that is genetic (where my body stores fat), and part of it is that I just don't allow myself to get above maybe 15%. It's all about caloric management. Lots of things affect calories out, but only one thing affects calories in. There are lots of tools for weight loss, but caloric restriction is far and away the most impactful.

I don't hardcore count calories, but I'm aware of what I eat. I look at it like a budget. If I want to get leaner, I start making some cuts. I find it VERY easy to trim a few hundred calories per day with only minor adjustments. I NEVER eat food I don't enjoy. I NEVER starve myself. It requires discipline and consistency and patience, but weight loss is accessible to everyone.

Back at it. Pull ups (in many variations) are maybe my favorite exercise. They're the ultimate upper body pulling movement, IMO. They're not the only thing I do for pulling strength or to develop my back, but they're the primary one. I love the rings because they allow for rotation at the shoulder, through the movement. I've put on a few pounds of muscle since these photos. It will be interesting to see the difference when we shoot again this year.

My good friend @donchamplin took these photos last October after shooting some snakes at my place. Y'all know anyone else with gymnastics rings in their living room? 😆 Part of maintaining my discipline with my physical practices is just making it part of my life and identity, rather than just another thing on a list of things to do. These photos were taken a few days before my 44th birthday. I ain't slowing down yet.

I like snakes.

This one in particular. He is as beautiful as any snake I've ever seen anywhere. Luzon mangrove snake (Boiga dendrophila divergens), Polillo Island locality.
