Some stories scare us with the monsters they create… and then there are those that force us to look at the monsters living inside our own minds.

Malakar and Starla were both raised by monsters and haunted by them. He ended up becoming one of them, while she spent her life being haunted by the cruelty of those around her.

Their relationship explores the connection between trauma, attachment, and conflicting emotions, with a dynamic that evokes Stockholm syndrome.

And then… there’s Milo.

Milo and Malakar are the same person, but they represent completely different sides of someone who is constantly fighting against his own mind. Malakar is his darker side, sinking deeper and deeper into the darkness, driven by the voices that haunt him. Yet, despite claiming that Milo is dead, there are moments when he still allows him to surface.

What is real? What isn’t? Are the voices real, or are they the product of minds that seem determined to drag them further and further into the darkness? Both Malakar and Starla struggle with this, making the story as disturbing as it is impossible to put down.

Now, one more thing… I’ve read books where certain objects were used for rather unconventional purposes… Weapons, knives, screwdrivers… But BONES?! That’s a first. 😳

My only downside was that, at a certain point, the story started to feel like it was going around in circles… but even so, those very repetitions help reinforce the cruelty of their thoughts and the psychological spirals the characters find themselves trapped in.

Ultimately, this is a story about trauma, the monsters surrounding us, and the ones we carry within ourselves.

I finished this book speechless. It left my heart in pieces. 🖤

A special thank you to @donnakesslerauthor for choosing me as an ARC reader and for giving me the opportunity to read this book. 🫶🏼
