Presenting “Permanence/Impermanence” featuring @donnastain in conversation with @megan_morton

Donna is an artist and botanical engineer who harnesses the emotional power of nature through sculpture, shifting atmosphere and transforming space. She speaks of her relationship with the landscape as a “teacher” – a muse to her creative practice – with her global travels bringing new layers of perspective to her appreciation of nature, place and design.

“I’ve spent my career working with materials that are temporary by nature, what interests me is what remains… nature never stops evolving,” says Donna.

Material Shorts, presented by @megan_morton and @artedomus, is a custom-produced series celebrating the human side of creativity and living an inspired life.

“Remember at school when you made up Pig Latin? It needs to be like that - wordless but entirely understood. Real magic is made ‘in-between’ people working together to make a new language, then sharing it at the very end”. Shorts is quick series full of this magic by @motion_full (me and @sammcadam_cooper) about those who are true, interesting and interested. Shorts is for @artedomus and opens with THE Donna Stain. “Most florists don’t exist in the still life world of Instagram because nature is not a single shot or a straight angle. They’re wrestling with nature, extreme conditions, incredible rising costs, the ethics of refrigeration and transportation, the floral algorithm and burn out. I didn’t want to show Donna in a long, flowery dress, dancing through a meadow, following a sun spot around. Donna is both in the dirt and above the clouds in what she sees and delivers. To me, Donna is a borderless resource. While I’m lucky enough to live near her geographical orbit, she really does exist, live, breathe and work for an international audience of people who appreciate her art. Donna Stain is a floral designer & artist with over 35 years of experience, having worked in London, New York & Barcelona. After returning to Australia in 2023, Donna turned her focus to sustainable floral design, collaborating with local growers. Donna’s work merges natural forms with artistic vision, creating designs that reflect the connection between nature & deep respect for country. 🌿
