Who is your fundraising appeal reaching?

Before rewriting your message, consider whether it’s getting in front of people who already have a connection to your cause.

Our community asked about finding the right donors and choosing between broad outreach and targeted campaigns. (Question read by our host, @DanielFrancavilla, during our session on Fundraising Appeals: Asks That Engage).

Jena Lynch from @Donorbox recommends starting close to home: event attendees, volunteers, engaged followers, and people connected through your board and existing donors. Then look at where others with similar interests and values spend time, from community groups and local businesses to partner organizations and professional networks.

Ask: Who is already one or two degrees away from your organization, and how can you invite them closer?

"I've exploited stories."
ㅤ
Maria Bryan trains nonprofits on ethical storytelling, and she has made the mistakes she now teaches against.
ㅤ
She has worked in the Peace Corps and with immigrant communities, and she looks back on some of that work with grief. Her message to fundraisers who've done the same: once you know better, you can do better.

A donor who gives out of guilt might never give again. Maria Bryan calls it the "go-away gift."
ㅤ
Her test for any appeal: read it aloud to your grandparents. If you'd squirm, your donors will too.

"Our donors are gonna be deeply turned off by exploitive messaging, deeply turned off by urgent and manipulative asks."
ㅤ

Maria Bryan's daughter spent her first week of life in the NICU. Now Maria can't finish watching a NICU fundraising video.
ㅤ
The beeping monitors and the hallway footage send her right back to that week, and she never makes it to the donate button. The people a cause helps can be the donors its appeals push away.

"I can't bring myself to donate to organizations that are solving the issues that I experience."

Give your supporters a reason to hear from you between donation requests.

An impact update. A thank-you. A story about what their support made possible. An invitation to get involved.

These touchpoints help donors feel connected to your work and see that their contribution mattered.

In our “Fundraising Appeals: Asks That Engage” session, Jena Lynch from Donorbox answered a question submitted by an attendee: “How do we communicate regularly without every interaction feeling like a request for money?”

Her advice: start building the relationship before you need something. Make time to share, thank and connect between asks.

Before your next appeal, what could you send supporters that shows the impact they’ve already helped create?

If your whole year has been building toward Q4, take a breath and look at what is already in place.

A big year-end campaign can bring in gifts. It can also leave a nonprofit team exhausted by January if the relationships and follow-up have no steady system behind them.

Before the rush, check three things: Can someone give monthly? Does your story show what their support makes possible? Who follows up after the gift?

Donorbox can help with the giving path. My Mogul Media helps nonprofits connect that path to the story, email follow-up, and the people responsible for it.

If you want to look at your Q4 donor journey together, comment or message me "Q4."
