We are thrilled to introduce the work on Don Perlis into the gallery — presenting ‘Epstein Dreaming of His Heroes, 2026, as a part of our group exhibition HEROES.

____________Don Perlis [b. 1941] is an American painter based in New York City, known for his socially engaged artworks, and whose career spans decades. He was the youngest member of an artistic group, reviving representational painting in the 1960s, and made his debut exhibition at the Whitney Museum show, ‘22 Realists’ in 1970, curated by James Monte. Since then, he has held over twenty solo exhibitions in New York, as well as many group shows, including at the National Academy of Design, the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Queens Museum, and the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Perlis is known for his oil paintings, where he avoids photography as reference and utilizes a continual space based on perception and imagination. His subjects include landscapes and portraits to elaborate multi-figure compositions that reflect opera, mythology, classical literature, politics and culture.

At age 40, Perlis began making his first works dealing with contemporary social issues. In 2020, ‘Floyd,’ his painting depicting the death of George Floyd was exhibited on billboards in major cities across the US. A lifelong New Yorker, he was born and raised in the Bronx and currently works and resides in Brooklyn.

ZAROLAT is proud to present HEROES — the 12th curation of the gallery, now open in DUMBO Design District. The group exhibition brings together 12 artists and designers from the gallery’s international community, presenting one-of-a-kind and limited edition works of furniture, lighting, sculpture, objects, and artworks, exploring the ways we create, celebrate and influence.

HEROES takes its cue from Don Perlis’ painting ‘Epstein Dreaming of his Heroes’, which marks the artist’s first presentation at the gallery. The show considers ‘the hero’ not simply as a figure of admiration, but as a reflection of the values, ambitions, and contradictions of the world that creates them. In today’s world, who do we call heroes? HEROES embraces this tension by challenging ideas of power and identity, while looking toward art and design as a form of agency — where the act of creating becomes a way to question, resist, and ultimately push back against structures of power.

Don Perlis ⭐️Painter. Studio visit.
I got to visit Don’s studio that he was awarded by Sharpe-Walentas Studio Program, during Dumbo Open Studios this past weekend ( 4.19.26)
@whitehotmagazine critic Donald Kuspit said: “Perlis is the Pieter Bruegel of our times. Bruegel’s works were sharpe or sarcastic and provocative; socially critical and ruthlessly realistic.”
