March 1st is International Wheelchair Day, so I thought I would enlighten you all as to why the heck I’m “suddenly” using a wheelchair.

As most of you don’t know, I took a gap year in the middle of my sophomore year of college when my health started rapidly deteriorating. During that year, I was diagnosed with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS). hEDS is a connective tissue disorder that affects the way that my body processes collagen. To put it nicely, my body is falling apart at the seams. My joints are very unstable and prone to dislocations. This causes chronic pain, easy injury, poor circulation to my legs, muscle weakness, and like a million other things.

I use a wheelchair to prevent injury and pain, and to allow me to do more. Without my chair I would be stuck in one place wherever I go. I wouldn’t be able to explore places or go do things with my friends.

One thing I want to say about my life as a wheelchair user: I AM HAPPY! I LOVE MY LIFE! I have good people in my life. I’ve finally found a church at Clemson. I’ve made tons of friends through Wheelchair Tennis. My disability is not a negative or positive in my life. It’s just a part of my life.
