@dontshootpdx is a community action plan and arts and education organization that promotes social justice and civic participation.

Teressa Raiford is the founder of Don’t Shoot Portland and is an inspiration to so many Oregonians. She is a community organizer, storyteller, and advocate for the arts and racial justice.

If you swipe through these photos you can see an image of their Liberated Archives for Black Lives, which focuses on education, documentation, and preservation of history, illustrating Oregons’ discriminatory legislation through print material, historical documents, archival footage and photography.

Also pictured here is their Black Memory and Preservation Lab, a living archive dedicated to preserving and uplifting Black history, art, and cultural memory.

You can experience both first-hand by attending one of Don’t Shoot Portland’s events or exploring its website at the LINK in our BIO!

We all have the right to access them. As an archivist and community organizer with grandkids, I have to use art. That's the strongest and safest tool I have. No one can take away the power of our lived generational experiences or our creativity.” Below the quote, it reads: "Teressa Raiford, Don’t Shoot Portland Founder and Community Organizer."

NATIONAL ARCHIVES MONTH 2026 ✏️

TAISHONA CARPENTER is a 2026/2027
University of Oregon Special Collections and University Archives Brian Lanker Fellow whose photographic practice explores memory, place, personal history, and the power of reimagining the archive.

Working with a Canon AE-1 35mm film camera given to her by her mother, Carpenter documents the landscapes, encounters, and experiences gathered throughout her personal travels. Her photographs become both a record of lived experience and an intimate inheritance-connecting generations through the act of seeing, remembering, and preserving.

In this exhibition, Carpenter brings her personal 35mm landscapes into conversation with the iconic portraits of Brian Lanker’s I Dream a World: Portraits of Black Women Who Changed America.

Through composite imagery, she reimagines Lanker’s subjects within the visual worlds of her own making, creating new relationships between portraiture and landscape, historical documentation and contemporary experience.

The resulting works offer an exhilarating, colorful contrast to Lanker’s collection while honoring the women whose lives, leadership, and legacies continue to shape our collective imagination.

Opening during National Archives Month in Portland’s historic Albina neighborhood at The Low End, Carpenter’s exhibition invites viewers to consider the archive as a living, evolving space-one where personal memory meets collective history, where photographs carry stories across generations, and where Black histories can be continually revisited, expanded, and reimagined.

Through this work, Carpenter transforms the camera into a tool of connection, placing her own experiences in dialogue with an enduring visual record of Black women’s history and possibility.

❓What are Fusion Centers and how do they put our civil liberties at risk?

Fusion centers are a vast, nationwide network of federally funded domestic surveillance programs whose development has been fueled by the increasingly notorious U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Fusion Centers purport to collect, analyze and share information about crime across all levels of government and with other entities, but have a poor track record for intelligence gathering and checkered history of abuses.

📣 The ACLU of Oregon and Don’t Shoot Portland are petitioning the Oregon Attorney General to review the Oregon Department of Justice (ODOJ)’s refusal to disclose public records relating to the Oregon TITAN Fusion Center (OTFC).

For two decades, Oregon TITAN Fusion Center has operated with little oversight or transparency while collecting, analyzing, and disseminating Oregonians’ personal information in the dark. And the little that has been exposed about its practices has only eroded public trust.

Our organizations urge the Attorney General to stop relying on the unauthorized Third Agency Rule as a blanket exemption to Oregon Public Records Law. The people of Oregon deserve transparency about how state, local, and federal police cooperation affects their rights and freedoms.

Happy Friday NRS community! @miccrenshaw here

Mama C (@offical_mamacharlottesmusic2) is in Oakland this weekend for the 60th Anniversary of the Black Panther Party, but on October 3rd, she blessed Portland with a live appearance. I can’t say enough about how great this event was.

Dozens of people came out, and I saw folks I hadn’t seen for years. Many Black folks, many allies of various ethnic groups (Blk/Brwn, Asian, Indigenous), including white allies/accomplices. There was great food from Akadi, and great vibes overall from all the folks in attendance.

Big thank you to Face King (@therealfaceking) for bringing the fire with your dancers and live performance that got us all on our feet, egbe.vado & @anglada.pedro & thanks to tg for live percussion! Beautiful artwork, In Living Colored, in second photo by Julian Gaines @juworkingprojects. And last but not least big shout out to our partners for Culture Bloc’s first ever public event @dontshootpdx @blackoregonpov!

Thank you all for coming out to support Culture Bloc and stay tuned for even more music, dancing, community, and smiles.

PS. Be sure to check out @yingi1959 and @therealfaceking amazing video footage featuring some of the night’s happenings by seeing their reposts on our @new.room.studios page.
