Tag 1 unserer paläontologischen Grabung im Thüringer Wald! ⛏️🦴

First publication! 🦟🌿

Almost two years ago, I definitely didn’t expect that a summer at the Messel Pit would somehow lead to describing new Cretaceous mayflies preserved in Kachin amber — but here we are!

During the 2024 Messel Pit excavation, fellow researcher Hui Jiang asked whether I’d like to get involved in an amber insect project she had in the pipeline. What followed were months of diving headfirst into mayfly anatomy, taxonomy, and a LOT of wing venation terminology 😂

Somewhere along the way, we realised the material contained two new species, including an entirely new genus, which still feels slightly surreal to say out loud.

The new genus, Crehkahtihtengia, combines “Cre-” (for Cretaceous) with the Jinghpaw/Kachin word hkahti-hteng, meaning “mayfly,” honouring the Kachin origin of the fossils. One of the new species, Hexameropsis fehrmannorum, was named in honour of my maternal grandparents Erika and Rudolf Fehrmann, who played a huge role in nurturing my fascination with the natural world from an early age, and to whom I am endlessly grateful :)

It’s been incredibly rewarding getting the chance to contribute to this research whilst also learning from such a great team throughout the process. It was also really awesome getting to contribute some of my own palaeoart to the paper, reconstructing the mid-Cretaceous landscape and ecosystems, while also reconnecting a bit with the palaeobotany I usually work on ;)

Very grateful to everyone involved, especially Hui Jiang for her mentorship and for bringing me onto the project in the first place, and also to everyone who had to tolerate the endless mayfly talks over coffee over the past year 🫶🏻

This bachelor’s thesis grew out of a project I became involved in somewhat by chance, and that developed over the past year. What began as a palaeobotanical and palynological study slowly shifted in scope, as small and easily overlooked details began to point toward a much larger palaeoecological story. A lot of that process also translated into palaeoart and reconstructions as part of the research — still under wraps for now, but more on that later ;)
Simply getting to work on material from an Edmontosaurus bonebed was pretty special, as it’s quite literally my favourite dinosaur as cheesy as that sounds haha
Bringing together a long-standing fascination for hadrosaurs with a more recent passion for palaeobotany and palynology made it possible to build a broader picture of one of the most well-known Late Cretaceous ecosystems.
From countless drafts, late nights, and more than enough coffee to the opportunity to present this work at two conferences (Geo4Goettingen & PalAss2025) — traveling, exchanging ideas, and speaking with researchers I’ve long looked up to — continually reaffirming why I enjoy doing this research :)
I’m deeply grateful to my supervisors for their trust, guidance, and encouragement, and to the Senckenberg Institute — a museum I adored as a child — for the opportunity to collaborate on their Edmontosaurus project.

And of course, thank you to my family, my girlfriend, and my friends for the patience, support, and encouragement during the many hours spent in the lab, researching, writing, and following along at conferences ;)

Plenty more in the pipeline… 🦕🌿
