Two weeks sober, I threw a Halloween party for 300+ people at my house and felt like the loneliest I had ever been.

A year ago today I got sober. I’m not writing this for congratulations or high fives. I’m writing it in case it helps someone.

I’ve been extraordinarily lucky in life. Beautiful family, great friends, a pretty cool life. For 30 years I went as hard or harder than anyone I knew. That’s what I was known for. The party never really started until everyone went home and I could drink and drug alone until I couldn’t anymore.

Behind it all, I was falling apart. Ambulances, police cars, violence and stupidity. Suicidal. Psychosis. Close to losing my mind and my family. I ended up on my hands and knees at a friend’s condo, praying for the first time in my life, swearing to Anyone that I was done.

The early going wasn’t easy. I was more depressed than before I got sober, and ashamed of it, because I had a life to be grateful for.

Early on I just sat at home feeling sorry for myself, wondering if this was even a life I wanted to live.

What got me through? Lots of little things: some exercise, walking, nature, reading (actual books), a team of positive people around me, new friends after years of keeping my circle tiny.

I found a 12 step program and leaned on it hard. Meetings almost every day, more when I got really down.

Things got better. I learned to love new things: mornings, conversations, presence, honesty, community, looking in the mirror without shame. A puppy for my girls that I realize now I needed more than they did.

Some days are still rough. I’m still learning who I am. If I forget your name or I’m super awkward when I’m out, that’s the social anxiety. Sorry.

Do I ever miss my old life? Honestly, often.

But I’m a better father, husband (low bar), friend and human. Life is better and more interesting - there’s zero chance I’m going back.

Lately I’ve been able to help a few people in their own recovery, and it’s been amazing.

If you’re struggling, or quietly falling
apart behind a life that looks fine from the outside, reach out. My DMs are open. No judgment, no lectures. I’ve been there.
