It was a privilege to welcome @SUNY Chancellor John B. King Jr. and the SUNY Board of Trustees, including Chairman Merryl H. Tisch and Trustee Marcos A. Crespo, during their recent visit to Fort Schuyler. They engaged with our cadets, discovering what sets Maritime College apart as the premier institution for maritime education.

During this engagement, they joined a small group of Pay It Forward Fund (PIFF) and Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) cadets for lunch, where cadets shared their personal experiences and highlighted the impact of PIFF’s interest-free loans in support of their Summer Sea Term training expenses. Maritime College Supports New York’s Veterans!

Captain Thomas Murphy, USN (Ret.), Chief of Staff at Maritime College, served as a guest speaker at Assemblymember @Landon Dais New York Veterans Summit at the Intrepid Museum.

During the event, CAPT Murphy highlighted the meaning of service and sacrifice, the benefits of a maritime education, and the opportunities available to help veterans transition into rewarding, well-paying careers across New York City’s and New York State’s maritime industry.

Through education, workforce development, and continued support, Maritime College remains committed to empowering veterans to turn their military experience into successful civilian careers.

One Call. Thousands Answered.

On September 11, 2001, the nation witnessed extraordinary acts of courage, service, and sacrifice.

On Tuesday, October 6th, Maritime College was honored to receive a piece of World Trade Center steel from the FDNY. This tangible piece of history will be permanently incorporated into the 9/11 Boatlift Monument on our campus.

The steel will serve as a lasting reminder of the maritime community’s extraordinary response that day—and the thousands of mariners, who answered the call, rescuing more than 500,000 people as the largest boatlift in history.

America is rebuilding its shipyards. But rebuilding a maritime nation takes more than shipyards. 🇺🇸⚓️

Billions of dollars in private investment are flowing into new American shipbuilding capacity:

Baltimore’s Arsenal-2.
Brownsville’s Port Alpha.
Thousands of jobs.
Millions of square feet of new industrial capacity.

It is a major vote of confidence in American shipbuilding, but there is a larger question.

For decades, the United States has watched its commercial shipbuilding base and merchant fleet shrink while competitors dramatically expanded theirs. New yards can give America the capacity to build again, but capacity alone does not create a maritime power. CARGO PREFERENCE DOES!

You need ships.

You need mariners.

You need cargo to move!

You need welders, engineers, machinists, shipyard workers and suppliers.

And you need a commercially viable fleet that keeps that industrial base working in peacetime and provides sealift capacity when the country needs it most.

So perhaps the question isn’t whether America can rebuild its shipyards.

It’s whether America is prepared to rebuild its maritime system with them.

A new visitor has tied up at the Bellingham Shipping Terminal: the SS Gem State, a Maritime Administration - MARAD crane ship built in 1965 and one of the few steam-powered vessels still around today.
The Gem State will be layberthed here for a little over a month while it waits for dry dock work and painting in Everett. While she’s here, we’re also putting our upgraded shore power system to work, marking one of the first uses of this major investment.
A big thank you to the local ILWU crews who helped get the vessel safely tied up.
The Bellingham Shipping Terminal is open for business, and activity like this is becoming a more regular sight on our working waterfront.

This is the actual designation — signed, dated, official. Established under 46 U.S.C. § 51706, valid 2026–2031.

This is the line that got us. From the letter itself: “The graduates passing through your pipeline represent the frontline of our maritime lifeline.” That’s every mariner who’s ever trained with us.

This isn’t a commendation — it’s a formal federal recognition that our curriculum, faculty, and training capacity meet national standards for maritime workforce readiness. One of a select group of institutions nationwide to hold it.

Every instructor. Every live-fire scenario. Every certification issued. This is what it was building toward — and it belongs to our whole team.
