Shooting the Walther P99 for the first time. Made famous by its use as James Bond’s primary handgun in the latter three of Pierce Brosnan’s four films from 1997-2002 and the start of the Daniel Craig era with Casino Royale in 2006, it became instantly recognizable as James Bond’s gun just like the Walther PPK did all the way back in the early 1960’s. The P99 ushered in a new era and was a big part of the aesthetic of Brosnan’s version of Bond. It was also Bond’s main firearm in the subsequent video games of both the Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig eras too. It felt so good to shoot and is very comfortable to hold. Although it’s not exactly suitable for smaller hands, if you have medium sized hands or larger then it will be perfect. The swappable back straps make easy to adjust the fit and feel for your hands. The sound is very satisfying too, especially when hitting steel plates. Of the 10 rounds it holds I got 9 on the plates, pretty good for the first time if you ask me. The Walther P99 is one of my favorite pistols of all time, thanks to Bond, and is considered by many fans and general gun enthusiasts to be a true modern classic. There’s something classic yet futuristic in the design that makes it timeless in my opinion. Like many of the things my James Bond fandom has granted me to do in recent years, this was a childhood dream I was finally able to fulfill in my 30’s. It’s hard to believe that it will have been 30 years next year since the Walther P99 was introduced to the world, just four years younger than I am. I owe a huge thank you to my friend Taylor from @q_branch_actual for taking me to his local range in Holbrook, Massachusetts and letting me try his various guns seen in the Bond films over the decades, it was truly a fantastic day and one of the best I’d had in months. If you ever have an opportunity to go shoot a Walther P99 (or any of the guns seen on screen in the Bond films) do it, you won’t be disappointed. #jamesbond #007 #waltherp99 #handguns #jamesbondfan

Casino Royale (2006) is the fourth, and final, appearance of the Walther P99 as James Bond’s primary pistol and is the first outing with a new actor playing 007 (Daniel Craig). The end of something old with the start of someone new. The Walther P99 is seen five times throughout the film and four of them Bond is using it suppressed. It’s first seen in the opening scene when Bond breaks into Dryden’s office in Prague and assassinates him, making it his second kill which MI6 field agents need to become a Double-O. The second is right after the title sequence where we see Bond in Africa chasing after bomb maker Mollaka played by @sebastienfoucan. Bonds P99 is seen in its holster carried inside his waistband during the foot chase and when he fights Mollaka on top of the crane. The gun Bond uses when when dragging him through the embassy at the end of the scene is a browning Hi-Power that he took from someone else. Then, when Bond and Mollaka jump out of a window behind the embassy, they’re surrounded by guards while Bond holds Mollaka at gunpoint. Bond drops the Hi-Power then pushes Mollaka forward, takes out the P99 from his waist holster, kills him and shoots some gas tanks creating a diversion to escape.

The third use is when Bond receives an envelope at the Hotel Splendide in Montenegro where him and Vesper Lynd are staying. He goes to his Aston Martin DBS and opens it to find a letter from M and with it a new Walther P99 with a suppressor attached. He clears it, decocks it and puts it back in the envelope. The fourth use of the P99 it is in the stairwell fight between Bond and African arms dealer Steven Obanno in the Hotel Splendide in between rounds of poker. That last hand nearly killed him.

The final appearance of the P99 is towards the end when Bond is chasing after Vesper in Venice, Italy when he figures out that she unwillingly double crossed him to save her boyfriend. Vesper gives the poker game winnings to Gettler, an operative for the crime organization Quantum. Bond shoots his men and follows Vesper to a house that’s sinking into the water where Vesper ultimately meets her demise. #jamesbond #007 #casinoroyale #danielcraig #waltherp99

Die Another Day (2002) is the third James Bond film to feature the Walther P99 as Bond’s primary pistol. We first see it in the opening scene where Bond and two other agents surf up to the Pukch`Ong Coast in the North Korean de-militarized zone. They run up the beach and into a field and disable the base’s communications. Bond turns the fin on the board and slides the bottom open revealing equipment issued by Q-Branch including a Walther P99 with a suppressor, C-4 explosives, communicator device and a knife. They intercept Mr. Van Birk, a diamond smuggler, before he meets with Col. Moon. Bond is disguised as him and takes his place and meets with Moon.

A few scenes later, Bond is using the new virtual reality machine in MI6’s Q-Branch. He is cleaning his gun in his office at MI6, he hears a muffled gunshot in another room, loads the magazine, releases the slide and checks the halls. After finding Moneypenny dead, him and Chief of Staff, Charles Robinson, kill the intruders in the hall but find M in her office held at gunpoint by one of them. Bond shoots her through the shoulder to hit the gunman, leaving M with only a flesh wound.

Bond hears London calling and meets the main villain, Gustav Graves, at the Blades Club. Bond is invited to Graves’s ice palace in Iceland. After the reveal of Graves’s satellite Icarus and bedding fellow MI6 agent Miranda Frost, she hands Bond his gun from under his pillow. He goes outside and uses the laser in his Omega Seamaster watch to cut a hole in the ice, swims under the ice and comes up in Graves’s diamond mine next to the palace. Bond confronts Graves and Miranda comes in. She appears to be on Bond’s side but he failed to look inside his own organization for the traitor. Looks can be deceptive. She then turns her P99 on Bond but he escapes.

Finally, the climax on Graves’s private Antonov cargo plane. Bond and NSA agent, Jinx Johnson, sneak onto the plane. Bond tries to shoot Graves but a guard pushes him and shoots one of the windows. Everything flies out and Bond and Graves have a fist fight. Hoisted by his own petard, graves is defeated and Bond and Jinx escape. #jamesbond #007 #dieanotherday #piercebrosnan #waltherppk

Bond: “Ah, the new Walther. I asked Q to get me one of these.”

I recently got to shoot one of my favorite guns for the first time, the first generation Walther P99 made famous by its use by James Bond across four films, and two actors to play the part, in three of Pierce Brosnan’s four films and Daniel Craig’s debut as 007. These films are Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), The World Is Not Enough (1999), Die Another Day (2002) and Casino Royale (2006). Designed from 1994-1996 and introduced in 1997, the Walther P99 was incredibly innovative for the time with a polymer frame and metal slide (a new concept for the time), double/single action trigger, internal striker pin with decocker button and an ambidextrous paddle magazine release on both sides of the trigger guard. It holds 15 rounds of 9mm and 12 of .40 S&W.

In Tomorrow Never Dies, in the third act, Bond and Chinese Intelligence agent, Wei Lin, are in her hidden base in Southeast Asia. She presses a button and the walls move, revealing a small armory packed with weapons, equipment and even some watches including an Omega Seamaster Diver 300M just so happens to fit him perfectly, since he lost his last one a few scenes before. Bond walks over to one of the racks of pistols and grabs the, then new, Walther P99. After 35 years an 18 films, this was the official change to a different firearm for James Bond from the Walther PPK to the P99, a significant moment for the character. This became his main side arm for the next four films for the next nine years. The P99 soon became an instant classic and was quickly known as James Bond’s gun in both the next few films and subsequent video games of that era. I absolutely love the P99 and it was a big part of the Bond that I grew up with. There’s something about the silhouette of it that’s classic but still modern, even by today’s standards and was the start of a new era of polymer framed guns that is common place today. The Walther P99 is so comfortable to hold and shoot, the sound of it is very satisfying too. I felt like I was in those later Brosnan era films and games shooting this. #jamesbond #007 #waltherp99 #piercebrosnan #tomorrowneverdies

The Walther PP, invented by Carl Walther, was introduced in 1929 for German police and later adopted by German military officers during WW2. The name PP stands for Poliziepistole (Police Pistol in English). It is a semi-automatic pistol with straight blowback operation and a fixed barrel design. The trigger is a DA/SA (double-action/single-action) trigger, the first of its kind at the time, and came chambered in both .32 ACP and .380 ACP. The safety also acts as a decocker that safely drops the hammer.

After WW2, former British Naval Intelligence officer turned author Ian Fleming had great success with his first five James Bond novels. In 1956 he received a letter from a fan named Geoffrey Boothroyd, a British firearms expert, who suggested that the Walther PPK in .32 ACP with a suppressor would be a better choice for Bond to carry over the weaker .25 ACP Beretta 418 calling it a “lady’s gun." Fleming took his advice a switched to the PPK, later naming a character after him called Major Boothroyd, the armorer for MI6, in the sixth novel From Russia With Love (1957). In the first Bond film, Dr. No (1962), M (head of MI6) makes 007 (Sean Connery) trade in his trusted .25 ACP Beretta 418 (which on screen was really a Beretta 1934 in .380 ACP) for a slightly bigger, more powerful Walther PPK in 7.65mm (.32 ACP). When Major Boothroyd takes the Betetta he says “Nice and light…in a lady’s handbag. No stopping power” taking from what the real life Geoffrey Boothroyd originally said to Fleming. However, the gun Boothroyd hands Bond on screen is actually the Walther PP in .32 ACP which has a slightly bigger frame and holds one extra round than the PPK. These are two of four continuity errors we see in Dr. No. The Walther PP is never seen on screen again, since he used the PPK from the second film onwards, but it is seen in a promotional photo of Timothy Dalton’s second Bond film License To Kill (1989). Those are the only times Bond is seen with the PP. It felt great to shoot and was well balanced, I loved it. #jamesbond #007 #waltherpp #drno #licensetokill

Casino Royale at 20

On Sunday night ‘the usual suspects’ and I watched Daniel Craig’s first outing as 007 for our monthly film club.
I don’t think I have watched CR for a couple of years so it was great to experience it again. Such a fantastic Bond film and a really impactful way to introduce a new 007.
The chemistry between Bond and Vesper still works so well, the score from David Arnold hits you for the emotional scenes and gets you pumping for the action sequences.
The film club chat was such good fun, think we all thoroughly had a great night 🎥

Here’s to a year of celebrating 20 years 🍸
