How to enjoy the Kent coast during the ‘Ber months… 🌊🍁

This month, we’re being ‘inFLUENCED by’ Rosie Percy, the lifestyle creator behind @coolasfolke and director of @pridefolkestone

Having swapped bustling city life for the calm of the coast, Rosie knows a thing or two about discovering Folkestone’s hidden gems - from seaside strolls to cosy days at @pomusfolkestone, @thefolkestonebookshop and @beershopfolkestone are calling.

During the process of thinking about the upcoming 2027 @offseasonmargate, I was reminded of my folk-reimagined- Sylvanian Families- Exodus- inspired fever dream window installation at @doubloonsmargate from last year: Tanat, Tanetus, Thanatos: in Search of Albion’s Isle of Fire and Death

‘This surrealist window diorama considers the themes of myth-making, play, story-telling, identity, liminality, folklore, and forgetting. Margate’s blindingly white cliffs have always held the fertile potential for an apocryphal folk-etymological lens. The invention of ritual, the creation of costumes, effigies and site-specificity are all fundamental to how we build and re-purpose tradition. My work considers these larger ideas on a smaller, more intimate scale. Nestled on my childhood room’s bright green carpet, this forged folk scene, re-casts my childhood Sylvanian Families figures into active myth-making agents. By their invented and fabricated costumes, to their blended folk effigy (somewhere between the 1973 ‘Wicker Man’ and 2006 ‘Waste Man’), we find these anthropomorphic animals mid ceremony.
The work embraces the absurd, asking us what role ‘play’ and ‘ imagination’ have in how we tell and re-tell stories of our origins. My favourite etymological theory is that Thanet originates from a proto-English, somewhere close to modern Dutch, ten ende: ‘at the end’. For that is where in my imagination Thanet sits, at the end, at the edge of land, language and time.’

There is an accompanying research essay as with all my works, soon to be available online once my Luddite-arse gets into gear.

We Marg-ATE 🤤
Who knew so much good food could be packed into one seaside town?! I was blown away by the independent shops and incredible community feel of Margate, and the food was the cherry on top. We tried everything from @palmspizzeria's giant house pizza to @doubloonsmargate's iced oat float, plus a massive cinnamon bun courtesy of @rise.and.bun and more brunch/breakfast options than seems feasible for a 2-day trip. I also became the proud owner of this new, very accurate cap. 10/10, no notes 👏

All good things must come to an end 🥲

You all did so well and hopefully discovered lots of great new places and faces whilst you were at it.

It was such a joy to see you get your stamps, attend the events and taste/try some new things.

Did you have a good time and crucially, did you manage to sleep?!

Thanks to all you seaside slurpers, hospo heroes, roaster toasters for making it happen.

Maybe we’ll do it again next year 💜💚

P.S. Winners of the Brew Bingo and the all important Margate Coffee Awards will be counted, verified and announced tomorrow. No more entries can be submitted.
