Creator Spotlight #5 comes from our friend, colleague, and my tall/bearded doppelgänger, Doug Stark aka IG memelord @dougathlon

Doug is a philosopher of technology, educator, and experimental research designer studying artificial intelligence, games, aesthetics, digital culture, and the future of knowledge work.

He is Assistant Professor of Technology and Digital Media in the English Department at the University of Texas at Arlington, where he directs the Synthetic Humanities Lab. Doug is currently developing Agentic Humanities OS for the lab as an infrastructure for humanities research in an age of AI agents.

Doug is one of the best thinkers we know on the luxuries of play and games. This is partly because, before academia, Doug competed for England in the decathlon. His essay “Games as Epistemic Mediators” is something we highly recommend. It argues that games were computational before there were computer games: https://www.dougstark.tech/files/writing/games-as-epistemic-mediators.pdf

Doug also contributed an essay to Interplay, “Simema: The Aesthetics of Autoplay in Freudenheim’s Schema,” which argues that self-playing games are best understood as a new form of cinema: https://www.dougstark.tech/files/writing/simema-aesthetics-autoplay.pdf

Now Doug has announced himself in new form as DouGPT, with a fabulous new essay on Taste, which you can read here: https://x.com/DouGPT5/status/2061775453724057740
