Here are some images from last Sunday’s night at the Festival of New Trumpet Music, with my Quartet featuring Sri Lankan percussion master Uthpla Eroshan, who brought something truly rare into the room — a unique quartet sound without a traditional drum set.

I’m especially grateful to Doug Wieselman and Jonathan Toscano for navigating and shaping this very demanding music. Their sensitivity made it possible to weave Sri Lankan odd meters with African and Flamenco rhythms, makam scales, layered counterpoint bass lines resolving on the third, tenth, and sixth beat of a buleríainto one living, breathing tapestry.

Sometimes I feel I’m still learning how to “not lean too far out the window” — how to combine ideas so jazz, tradition, and imagination meet in unexpected ways. But when I hear it, and when I imagine it, I know there’s a way for us to grow ourselves nevertheless.

The audience’s response was beautiful. One friend told me he felt transported to another world. And we were honored to have Jeff Beal in the room — he loved it, and now I finally have a good reason to watch House of Cards, whose music people keep telling me is extraordinary.

Thank you to everyone who came out. Thank you for your support. Thank you Dave and Lukas and everyone at FONT.

Special thanks 🙏 to MFM and The Cutting room to host the event!

Last Sunday, Marc joined a lineup of NY’s finest on the final performance of a 5 night run celebrating Allen Ginsberg’s centennial on Little Island. Appropriately facing over the Hudson toward New Jersey.

From September 2- 6th we had the pleasure to be part of the Allen Ginsberg centennial at Little Island, under the direction of our dear Thomas Bartlett (@tingalayo )
It was a real New York kind of week! Had the pleasure to meet Ginsberg twice- once in late 80’s after one of his readings, then early 90s when Oren and I were playing a jazz set at George Plimpton’s party. Ginsburg was a delight, and we talked about Paris, Bessie Smith… Hope his spirit was conjured. Here are a few glimpses from stage and behind the scenes. Sorry not to have photos of everyone! Most are tagged in photos, but missing are @mxviv @rufuswainwright @alsoanoperasinger @taylormacnyc @mobrowne @michaelcunningham_grig @ginagershon @terrancehayes @winokurz @allenginsbergofficial @ellahunt @rachelzegler @eddiestern @dschnirman
