How many people do you know who don’t know that this change is coming? The UK Government has announced a new statutory right to bereavement leave from April 2027 a significant development in how bereavement is recognised in the workplace. But announcements only make a difference when people know about them, understand them and know where to seek support. That is why conversations like this matter. As a nurse, grief and bereavement coach, and someone with lived experience of loss, I know that grief is more than sadness. It can affect our sleep, concentration, relationships, confidence, identity, work and everyday functioning. And sometimes, people return to work while carrying a pain that nobody can see. So let’s educate ourselves. Let’s educate our families, workplaces, churches and communities. Let’s share information rather than assumptions. And let’s create spaces where people can talk about grief before they reach breaking point.
