Throwback to our All-on-X Residency 🔙🦷

Live surgery. Live patient. Full digital workflow, start to finish.

These doctors didn’t just watch. They were in the room for a live All-on-X surgery, and stage 2 records captured on a live patient the same way we do it every day at MOD.

From there, we took it fully digital:
✅ Facially driven digital design in exocad
✅ Conversion
✅ 3D printing
✅ Milling the final restoration
✅ Characterizing zirconia in the green state and with final staining

Every step, hands-on, in real time. That’s the difference between learning about a workflow and actually owning it.

🦷 TRIAL SMILES: THE FOUNDATION OF MY PRACTICE!

I see so many designers and clinicians struggling with trial smiles. For me, they’re one of the most valuable tools in digital dentistry!

When designed and processed correctly, they can be incredibly thin, accurate, and easy to use.

Here are my TOP TIPS for predictable results! 👇

🔹 DESIGN & PRINT

1️⃣ DESIGN THIN!
I aim for just 180 microns (0.18 mm).

2️⃣ OPTIMIZE YOUR SUPPORTS

* SprintRay: Use Easy Peel supports.
* Chitubox: Support tip diameter of 0.15 mm and penetration depth of 0.1 mm.

🔹 REMOVAL & POST-PROCESSING

3️⃣ REMOVE CAREFULLY
Use a sharp razor blade to gently separate the print from the build plate.

4️⃣ WASH THOROUGHLY
Follow your resin’s recommended washing protocol.

5️⃣ GLAZE — BUT HERE’S THE TRICK!
🚨 DO NOT get glaze where the supports connect to the mockup! Otherwise, removing them becomes much more difficult.

6️⃣ TACK CURE
Use a handheld curing light to keep the glaze exactly where you want it.

7️⃣ FINAL CURE WITH SUPPORTS ATTACHED
Place the mockup in your curing unit for approximately 5 minutes, or according to your material’s validated curing protocol.

🔹 CLINICAL TRY-IN: TWO OPTIONS

OPTION A: REMOVE SUPPORTS FIRST

8️⃣ Carefully peel away the supports, polish any remaining bumps, and use try-in paste to evaluate the trial smile intraorally.

OPTION B: RELINE INTRAORALLY

8️⃣ Leave the supports attached during initial handling. Reline the trial smile intraorally with bis-acrylic, then remove the supports and polish the remaining bumps.

💡 MY BIGGEST ADVICE?

Keep your designs THIN, your supports MINIMAL, and your workflow SIMPLE.

Day 4 of the All-on-X Mini-Residency was 🔥

We started with green state characterization of Argen zirconia, then moved into 3D print characterization so everyone understood exactly how the material behaves before it ever touches a patient.

Then the room came alive 👇
LIVE PATIENT. Stage 2 records, captured in real time. No slides, no simulations. Our students watched every step on an actual full-arch case and saw how precise records set up a predictable result.

We closed the day by taking those records straight into final prototype design, connecting the data we captured to the smile we’re building.

This is what digital All-on-X education should look like: hands-on, patient-centered, and built on real workflows.

3D printing and dentistry. Where to begin? You could write books on the topic! Oh wait - @dr.wallyrenne has and gave it away for free 😂. But for real.

These two simple pictures touch on the transformative power that is digital design. These were created on a computer and then brought into reality with a 3D printer. Isn’t that cool? It’s not when — it’s now.

Smile trial is 150 microns thick. Onlay was printed in about 10 mins.

I’ve travelled the world learning from incredible educators. But sometimes you meet people and something just clicks. The vision, the values, the heart behind what they do. That’s what I found at MOD, and why joining them means so much to me.
What this team has built is incredible, and getting to know the people behind it has made joining even more meaningful. People who care about helping others grow and doing better for patients, doctors, and our profession. Finding that kind of energy means everything.

I became an educator because I saw what the care I could offer meant to my patients, and I wanted to help other doctors bring that same care to theirs. On my own, maybe I could change 10,000 lives. But if I can help 10,000 doctors do the same, imagine the impact.

Being part of what this team has built gives my purpose a reach I could never achieve alone. I’m so proud to join them, and I’m ready to give this everything I’ve got.

Together, we can help more doctors change more lives. Because at the heart of it all, dentistry is about a human helping another human smile again.
That’s why I teach. That’s why I’m all in.
