There’s something special about being in a room full of people who care as much as you do.
This weekend, I had the privilege of attending the @axogeninc axogeninc Head & Neck Course, and what struck me most wasn’t just the science; it was the people—old friends, trusted colleagues—surgeons who have shaped how I think about nerve repair, functional restoration, and what it truly means to give a patient their quality of life back. We talked shop, debated technique, and shared cases that humbled us.
Neurosensory reconstruction in head & neck surgery is often underrecognized but the difference between a patient who can feel their lip, smile without asymmetry, or swallow without fear that’s everything.
I'm grateful for the education and even more grateful for the people.

$A few of the worst facial fxs cts I’ve seen so far… • All with one mistake in common: No helmet. No seatbelt. • Some were riders. Some were drivers. Some were passengers who thought the back seat was somehow safer by default. • What you’re seeing in these X-rays isn’t just broken bone. It’s shattered skulls. split mandibles. Collapsed midfaces. Orbits fractured in ways that change how a face looks — and sometimes how eyes function — forever. • And behind every image, there’s a long road most people never think about: Multiple surgeries. Metal plates and screws. Weeks of swelling. Months of restricted eating. Ugly Scars. Sometimes even permanent damage. • But people love their excuses. “Just a short ride.” “It’s too hot.” “I’m a careful driver.” “I’m sitting in the back.” “It’s uncomfortable.” • Meanwhile, physics doesn’t care about comfort. Asphalt doesn’t care about confidence. Glass doesn’t care about experience. Your face will lose that argument. Every time. • Helmets don’t make you weak. Seatbelts don’t make you paranoid. They make you safe, harder to break. • The frustrating part isn’t the surgery. We fix fractures. That’s what we do. The frustrating part is knowing that many of these injuries didn’t need fixing in the first place. Not bad luck. Not fate. Choices. Wear the helmet. Fasten the seatbelt. Every ride. Every seat. Every time. Because reconstructing a face is far more uncomfortable than wearing protection for a few minutes. • And remember, even long after the fractures heal, the consequences may remain. Eating becomes different. Speech may be altered. Vision can be affected. Sensation may never fully return. Chronic pain. Psychological trauma. A permanent change in appearance. A face that no longer feels familiar. • And trust me, I get the adrenaline, the thrill, the need to look cool… but after seeing this, tell me—was it worth it? • • • #surgery #fracture #emergency #medicine bike$
