Here is something we wish more people knew.

Your zip code can say more about your health than your genetic code. Where you live shapes the air you breathe, the food within reach, whether a clinic is close, and whether the streets are safe to walk. None of that is a personal choice. All of it is built.

This is what we mean when we say health happens outside the doctor's office. If we want different outcomes, we have to change the places people live, not just the advice we give them.

Today is World Mental Health Day.

Here is a truth we do not say enough. Rest is not the reward you earn once the work is finally done. Rest is resistance, and it is radical, especially for the people who are always expected to produce.

DMV, y’all showed us what COMMUNITY looks like. 💜

The Butch Queen’s Brunch & Conversations: DMV was filled with so much love, joy, laughter, connection, and Black queer excellence. From the conversations around the tables to the hugs, smiles, dancing, and moments of genuine connection . This was bigger than your typical brunch.

We created a space where Black queer and bisexual men, trans men, and all of our community could simply show up, be seen, be celebrated, and experience JOY together.

These photos only capture a glimpse of the energy in the room. 🥂

October is Health Literacy Month, so let's talk about words.

In public health we love to call people hard to reach. But most of the time, the people are not hard to reach. The system is hard to navigate. It hides behind forms, jargon, office hours that do not fit a working life, and buildings you need a car to get to.

The words we choose decide who we blame. Say hard to reach, and the fix becomes changing the people. Say hard to navigate, and the fix becomes changing the system.

We know which one actually works.

World Mental Health Day is next Saturday, October 10.

We want to sit with something uncomfortable before then. So many of us in public health are burning out trying to save everyone else. We staff the clinics, hold the crisis lines, write the grants, and carry the weight of communities the system keeps failing.

The 40-hour workweek was never built for care work that never clocks out. If we are serious about mental health, we have to get serious about the conditions that erode it.
