Tanner Gerstberger’s hands tell the story of his craft. Calloused, cracked, sometimes bleeding from hours at the wheel... But beneath the roughness is something tender. A quiet love for creating that’s been with him since childhood.

“When I was little, I’ve always had a knack for creating,” he says. At eight, he took a pottery class. In high school, he was drawn to the wheel “a bit of a perfectionist,” trying to shape clay into symmetry. It didn’t come easy. “It took me weeks, if not months, before I got anything off the wheel that I was satisfied with.”

The real shift came when he met @dannymeisinger, his best friend’s dad, and a professional potter. “The first thing he ever said to me was, ‘Don’t go into pottery. It makes no money.’” Tanner apprenticed with him anyway. “It was night and day… I unlearned all my bad habits and strictly learned from him.”

Still, he chose a different path. A degree in construction management, a job in commercial building. But it didn’t quiet Tanner’s urge to make. “I still wanted to create stuff.” One day, he found a rental with a detached garage. “I was like, ‘Oh my goodness, this could be a pottery studio.’” It was all he needed.

Now based in Fort Collins, Colorado, Tanner spends his days throwing pots, teaching classes, and building a community around clay. “I want to give back the really great teaching I got from Danny... so that way people do not struggle as much as I did.” His students range from first-timers to seasoned throwers, birthday parties to kids with flying pots. One young student flattened her piece mid-spin. “All the emotion left her face,” Tanner recalled, but they went on to salvage the piece in the end.

When asked what makes a great artist, he doesn’t mention style or success. “It more so has to do with their belief within themselves… and their ability to show their community their diverse portfolio of talent.”

The process is never perfect. The point is to keep going. “Every day, take one step forward to keep getting better with yourself,” he says. “Just keep swimming. Just keep swimming.”
