“When I started, I felt safe asking for help. They’d show me step by step, but they let me try things myself. That was different. In other places, people just do it for you. Here, they gave me the chance to learn.” - Idara Wright-Umoh 🧡

“Taking Off the Survival Cloak” was more than a discussion, it was a necessary conversation.

It was a privilege to serve on this panel this past week. Faculty, and staff came together at Kingsborough Community College to engage in honest dialogue about authenticity, identity, and the realities Black men often navigate in academic and professional spaces.

Powerful insights were shared by an outstanding panel of leaders and educators, each bringing truth, vulnerability, wisdom, and lived experience to the table. Conversations like these remind us that creating spaces for reflection, support, and empowerment is not optional, it is essential.

A sincere thank you to all of the attendees who showed up, leaned into the conversation, and contributed their voices, energy, and perspectives. Your presence helped make this gathering impactful and meaningful.

Special thanks as well to our distinguished panelists for their honesty, leadership, and willingness to share openly: Dr. Charles Swift and HURFs (Historically UnderRepresented Faculty and Staff) for sponsoring; Dr. Evrick Brown, Kymel Yard, Tyronne Johnson, Dr. Avery Mullen, and Dr. Chico Knight. Your insights challenged, encouraged, and inspired everyone in the room.

Making the Invisible Visible: Black Women 365 Days of the Year is an exciting initiative led by Serendipity Institute for Black Arts and Heritage. Each day will showcase a different woman, whose story has shaped Black British or global Diasporic history; many of whom remain overlooked or under-celebrated in mainstream narratives. This will take the form of a rolling programme of short films, released throughout the year to keep these stories in daily circulation and to create an evolving constellation of leadership, resistance, artistry and enduring impact.

As Angela shared:
“Since joining Kindred, Shanell has been communicating more, smiling more, and feeling proud of her accomplishments.”

📣 KINDRED VOICES

“She’s more confident, more independent, and more able to speak up for herself.” — Charlotte’s mom

This month, we’re celebrating stories from our community. Today, meet Charlotte. 💛

👩‍🍳 Age: 31
⏳ Time with Kindred: 2 years
🏛️ This summer: Worked the cash register at the Children’s Museum pop-up
💭 Future dream: Own her own bakery + create her own recipes
🍋 Faves: Cinnamon buns + mini lemon loaves
🍽️ Trying new foods? YES 🙌

“She’s always needed someone to tell her the next step—but now she’s stepping up. She brushes her thick curly hair and puts it in a ponytail because she *knows* it looks good. And she *knows* it has to be back for work at the bakery.”

“I’m 62, and I had started to doubt I’d ever see her be independent. But watching her grow with Kindred has changed my vision for both of our futures. It’s pretty huge.”

✨ Thank you to Emma and Adam for helping us tell these beautiful stories.

🥖✨ Busy day at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum, but so worth it to connect with our grantors and share the grassroots work we’re doing every day.

Big thanks to @NYCommTrust and Rachel Pardoe for stopping by to see the growth of our still parent-led mission in action. 💛

Our pop-up ends August 30th — still time to come visit, taste, and see what we’re all about!

🥖💛 Huge thanks to @SabrinaHargrove and @MylaSeabrook from @bklynorg for visiting our pop-up at the @bcmkids ! Your smiles, support, and positive vibes made our day.

We loved brainstorming together about ways to grow our skill-building programs and bring more opportunities to our community. As one of our incredible grantors, Brooklyn Org is helping us make inclusivity the norm, not the exception — creating spaces where people of all abilities can learn, grow, and shine. 💫

🍞 Kindred Voices – August Feature
This month, we’re sharing the voices of Kindred Bakery BK participants and their families.

First up: Rohan & his son, Makaio – a proud Kindred participant.

⸻

Rohan:
*“I’ve lived here since ’93. My son Makaio is on the spectrum. We need more things like Kindred. I love it.

It helps the kids, not only in the kitchen, but to express themselves and communicate with people. I see the results with my son. He can go in the kitchen and make something—do things he never used to do before.

We don’t have a lot of programs for kids on the spectrum. A program like this that teaches life skills—how to cook, how to bake—is really good. As a father raising an autistic son, this is God sent.

Makaio’s home-schooled, so here he gets to meet people, be part of something. I’ve seen him sell what he bakes, talk to customers, laugh with other kids. Seeing him do something new puts a smile on my face.

If another family asked me, I’d say: give it a shot. You won’t regret it. It’s not just baking; they learn to communicate, hold a conversation, sell something. That’s a life skill.”*

⸻

Makaio:
“They have nice people there. And what they teach you is absolutely superb. I learned new skills—baking, and making new friends. That’s a life skill too.”

⸻

❤️ Thank you to @c.emma.m & Adam for supporting this series!
