“I was an entrepreneur stuck in a chiropractor’s body.”

Ryan believes most clinicians who own practices are still clinicians first.

For him, it was the opposite.

He stayed heavily clinical while trying to run the business at the same time and eventually found himself burnt out and being pulled in too many directions.

It took doing some work on himself to realise where his strengths actually were.

Developing people. Spotting opportunities. Solving problems. Building businesses.

Not every great clinician wants to become an entrepreneur, and not every practice owner is wired to stay heavily clinical forever.

Understanding which one you actually are can change the way you build your career.

Ryan wasn’t always the ultra-driven practice owner you might expect.

For the first few years of Chiropractic, by his own admission, he was pretty nonchalant about it.

It wasn’t until fourth and fifth year that something started to shift.

He began seeing clients, performed well in clinic and eventually decided he was going to open his own practice straight out of uni.

The more Ryan understood himself, the more he realised there was an “inner rebel” pulling him towards doing things differently.

Sometimes figuring out what you don’t want to do is just as useful as knowing exactly what you do.

An hour creating content could be more valuable to your practice than another hour of professional development.

A provocative take, but Ryan’s reasoning is pretty simple.

Most clinicians are already good enough clinically. If they want to grow a business, getting even better clinically isn’t necessarily going to bring more people through the door.

They need to learn how to communicate, market themselves and make sure people actually know they exist.

And when you create content, Ryan believes you shouldn’t try to appeal to everyone.

Be yourself. Be clear about who you help and what you stand for.

🎙️Rebel Radio Episode 9: Dr. Ryan Gleeson🎙️

This week on Rebel Radio, we’re joined by @dr_ryangleeson, a chiropractor,
entrepreneur and founder of Gorilla Chiropractic.

Ryan’s journey into chiropractic wasn’t exactly straightforward.

After three failed attempts to get into chiropractic, Ryan finally got in on his fourth.

From there, he went straight from university into building his own practice, learning the
business side along the way.

He had to learn how to get clients, market himself and build a business from scratch.

But one of Ryan’s biggest lessons came from things going wrong.

He talks openly about building a recovery center that never opened, how the project
became financially overwhelming, and eventually going bankrupt in 2017 and losing
everything he had built.

From there, he had to start again.

That experience shaped how he thinks about business today from predictable client
acquisition, to building systems that don't rely entirely on the owner, to understanding
when the biggest opportunity is actually fixing the bottleneck in front of you.

Ryan also shares why he recently stepped away from clinical work and realized that his
strengths had shifted towards leadership, developing people and building the business.

We talk about what success means to him now, and why it has become less about
business growth and more about having the time and space for family, faith,
relationships, travel and the things outside of work.

A conversation about failure, rebuilding, leadership, business, clinical growth, content
and what success really looks like.

When you’re stuck during a transition phase, the best people that can be honest and check you are your best friends. It feels great to finally ask for help, especially for someone like myself that struggles to ask for help but loves helping others.

This was a deep session that hit some emotional triggers, was confronting to hear but overall helped me gain a new perspective on myself.

If you’re ever stuck or you feel like you’ve lost your aura, just ask your closest friends to rinse the fuck out of you and ask them “what’s something that you’ve always wanted to tell me about myself that you haven’t yet?

Be open to hearing the constructive feedback because if it lands, it will help you get your aura back 🙏🏽
