Some moments at the drag strip never get old.

I’ve photographed the race track many times over the years, but this weekend I had the opportunity to capture something different
—the sights, sounds, and emotions that surround nearly every run.

The anticipation starts long before the green light.
The crew prepares.
The engine comes to life.
The ground begins to tremble.
Then comes the burnout.

A few seconds later, thousands of horsepower are unleashed down the track, and before you know it, the run is over. But that feeling inside doesn’t leave right away, it lingers with you for a while.

As photographers, we spend a lot of time looking through a lens. But there are moments when you stop shooting for just a second and simply experience what is happening around you.

Standing only a few feet away from a Funny Car as it roars to life is one of those moments. Instead of photographing, some of them I simply turned on the video camera and let it run and captured moments before the race all the way through the crew cheering on a successful run and walking off the track.

It’s loud.
It’s powerful.
It’s unforgettable.

And it’s one of the reasons I keep coming back to Firebird Raceway.

This past weekend, I used one Nikon Z8 camera for video and another Z8 for photos and captured amazing 4K video at 240fps. It is absolutely incredible to watch these cars in super slow motion as they takeoff.
