We were so grateful to welcome Dr. Heather Graham to Drake this month as a guest lecturer with our music education program. During her visit, she led three Modern Band workshops and classes, including a presentation for our collegiate chapter of the National Association for Music Education, guest lectures in the general music education class and small group student teaching seminar. Our students gained insight, practical tools, and encouragement from her time on campus. Special thank you to Dr. Nicole Ramsey, Assistant Professor and Director of Music Education at Drake, for helping create opportunities like this for our students. Go Bulldogs! 🎶🐾💙

Cam and I decided recently that learning about the rhythms we hear in our favorite songs felt like a pretty fun place to start our lessons. Today chose one of his favorites, the Jurassic Park thrme, and jumped right into the rhythms he heard. First, we had to start by learning how to read, write, and perform quarter notes, eighth notes, and rests patterns. He’s a natural, which makes his aunt pretty proud.😏😌 🎶🧠📖DID YOU KNOW?! In early childhood, learning to read and perform rhythms helps strengthen the brain systems that support language, attention, and pattern recognition. When kids clap, read, and play rhythms, they’re building the same neural pathways they later use for reading, processing speech, and problem-solving. It’s only Beckett’s second piano lesson, and he’s already improvising—creating his own melody as he follows my lead on the tempo, style, and dynamics. We had so much fun making music together! Enrollment is now open for saxophone and piano lessons in my studio at the Drake Community School of Music. All ages and levels of ability are welcome. For more information or to register, reach out to katelyn.stessman@drake.edu.
